Thanks to volunteers for Earth Day projects

Dear editor

On April 22, over 170 students, along with teachers, staff, and community members, participated in Earth Day activities.

Previously, local Girl Scout Troops planted rose bushes and a crab apple tree at the Old City Cemetery.

First Presbyterian Church, the Rockdale Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, and the Rotary Club, participated in projects around town and El Camino Real Master Naturalists provided a day of education and free handouts.

As a result, miles of city roadways were cleared of litter, bridges were re-painted around town, and 14 new trees were planted on streets around school campuses, and the city cemetery.

Monetary contributions were received from Cameron’s All Saints Episcopal Church, Rockdale Noon Lions Club, Rock-dale City Council Member Ricky Coppedge, David and Deta Donnelly, Randy and Barbara Holly, Rey Mata, Carol Matous and Judith Matula. Business support came from Tractor Supply Walmart, Brett’s Backyard BBQ, Corona’s and Dairy Queen, Lowe’s (Hut-to) and Touch of Elegance Catering provided breakfast tacos and beverages for volunteers.

Special thanks to The Rockdale Reporter and Rockdale Chamber of Commerce for promoting our month of activities.

An ongoing project at the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library, and a yet-to-be-started project at the Kay Theater are on the 2019 calendar.

April 22, 2020, will mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day worldwide and will be Rockdale’s Sixth annual celebration.

On behalf of this year’s committee, Joyce Dally, Deta Donnelly, Monique Gebhart, Tiffany Whitsel, Terry York, Gary Griesbach, Rey Mata and Collier Perry; thanks to everyone.
