Board should address hospital bankruptcy
Dear editor:
I see in The Reporter there will be a public hearing this week on proposals made by the hospital district in their effort to get a healthcare facility up and operating in Rockdale following Little River Healthcare’s bankruptcy. I will attend the meeting but, in advance, I want to express my desire that at that meeting the board will address the circumstances of Little River Healthcare’s bankruptcy.
I’d hoped the hospital district could have their financial needs met by the MDD sharing some monies but, according to the paper, that does not seem possible. We all recognize that healthcare is an economic issue for our community the same way clean water, attractiveness an a good school system are.
We can’t expect to expand our tax base with new business and industry unless we have a community in which people want to live and work.
With that said, I have serious concerns about the hospital district’s board’s oversight of Little River Healthcare and how its bankruptcy came about.
How did the hospital district board not see it coming? If it did, why was the community not made more aware of Little River Healthcare’s financial troubles? And how can I have confidence that the same thing would not happen again?
Again, I want to reiterate how important I believe it is that the residents of Rock-dale, current and future, have access to quality healthcare in our community.
I look forward to the public hearing and am optimistic the board will address the questions I’ve posed.
