Flag etiquette

As a veteran, it thrills me to drive around Rockdale and see all the U.S. flags flying proudly. However, with flying the flag, comes the responsibility to lower the flag to half-staff for certain solemn occasions.

Most of the time, it is for the death of a dignitary and the president will order the flag lowered on all federal buildings. We also should be lowering the flag on those dates but if you didn't hear the news; it is understandable if you don't.

There are other times it is lowered to honor a special day in history. There are only three days like that each year. They are Memorial Day, Patriot’s Day (Sept. 11) and Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7). In my opinion, our government facilities in town should be setting the example. Today, on Pearl Harbor Day, the U.S. Post Office had the flag lowered. Thank you.

City Hall and the County One Stop did not. We can do better than that.
