We have two feral cats that hate each other. Penny is only kind of feral, but Tiger is completely feral. I had to start feeding Tiger on the front porch and put Penny’s food on the back porch. Oddly, none of us has seen Tiger since it got cold., and she was not looking great last time we did.

Just in case she’s being sneaky I still put food out for her on the front porch. Lately a new dark gray feral cat has been eating on the front porch. I don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl, but I’ve been calling it a girl. No name yet since she’s new.

At first she would run away every time she saw me, but I guess she got used to me putting the food out and has warmed up somewhat. One morning as I was headed outside with my tea, she was on the front porch meowing at the door. When I opened it, she looked startled but didn’t run away. As a matter of fact she walked over to “her” food bowl and kept meowing to show me it was empty. So I filled it up and brought it back to her and she actually let me pet her as she stuck her head in the bowl to start eating.

So I guess we have another cat now. Maybe I’ll name her Smoky since that would work for a boy or a girl.

Cats are fun. We have two at work, Mavis and Cinder. Cinder loves our production guru, Shannon Whorton, and only tolerates the rest of us. Mavis, we found in front of The Reporter in a drain at four weeks old, so she’s basically been hand-raised and is very friendly to everyone. She seeks attention from all of us non-stop.

At home we still have our two dogs, Kallie and Flaco. Kallie we’ve had for a long time and she’s starting to get old. She is getting deaf like everyone else who lives in our house, including me.

Kallie brought Flaco home one day and he was feral. It took a long time for him to warm up to me, but he finally came around. He was so skinny we didn’t know if he was going to make it, but no animal in my care stays skinny for long. As a matter of fact, just the other day mom said, “He’s actually right pretty.” And of course he is.

Mom and dad are usually in their chairs when I get home from work and they know exactly when I pull up because Flaco runs to the back door to see me. And they always say, “Kyle must be home” when he runs up looking for me.

I’ve always had pugs as an adult. I had one named Sweet Pea for many years. After she died, I adopted Sandie Lou from PugHearts of Houston and had her in both Houston and Rockdale until she ran into the woods one day and never came back. She didn’t have a collar on, and I prefer to think someone picked her up instead of her being dead.

Pugs are high maintenance dogs, and I don’t think I will have another one. I like “dawgs” like Kallie and Flaco who are both easy care dogs.

One of my favorite quotes is by Anatole France: “Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” And I think that is true. My bothers and sister and I grew up with pets and continued to have them into adulthood.
