I was reading last week in the Book of Exodus. I know The Old Testament is not thought of as exciting reading and sometimes we don’t relate the stories to our lives in 2021, but humor me for a few minutes and listen to a story about the most commanding figure of the ancient world.
The Book of Genesis told the story of Man’s fall from Grace. Exodus tells the story of Man’s Redemption. The Children of Israel are experiencing a great oppression, but at the same time they are being Blessed by increasing greatly in numbers and growing with exceeding might.
Egypt’s King is fearful of an uprising and commands the male born Hebrew children to be killed. The mother of Moses hid him in a little boat in the river. She gave to God’s plan believing for a return for her sacrifice. When Pharaoh’s daughter found him she knew she needed to find a women who could nourish him, not by chance, Moses’ sister was on the seen and was instructed to take care of the problem.
Moses then was able to grow as a baby with his mother before being returned to the King’s daughter at a later age. Moses had opportunity to grow in knowledge while living as an Egyptian, but decided to go to his people. He noticed the burden they had been put under and saw an Egyptian beating one of his brethren, he took his life and buried him.
Pharaoh then sought to kill him so Moses fled to the land of Midian and waited by a well. He then helped the seven daughters of the priest water their animals as they were being harassed by the shepherds. Moses was in this place 40 years. He married, tended his father-in-law’s flock and now he is at a place that God speaks to him through a burning bush at the backside of the desert.
Have you ever wondered why you are at the place your life is today, or is there a purpose for you that you just don’t understand? Moses life was a series of contradictions. He was a child of a slave and a son to a Queen. He was the leader of armies and keeper of the flock. A mighty warrior to the meekest of men. He had the wisdom of Egypt and the faith of a child. He was backward in speech, yet he talked to God.
God has to get each of us to a place where he can talk to us and commune with us. Even if you don’t understand where your life is taking you right now, trust that God is in control and he knows the end of your struggle.
Remember we have two ears and one mouth so we need to listen twice as much as we speak. Be still and listen for God and he will speak. There are no shortcuts with God, so if you are in a place, listen for God. He has been there all the time.
