Sunday was a strange day for me. I left Rockdale about 1 p.m. for Intercontinental Airport in Houston to pick up my sister-inlaw, Noelia, who has been in Mexico for a month. It was a nice sunny day all the way to Houston, but for some reason, as soon as I left Rockdale, my phone had no signal at all, which was very strange.
When I pick Noelia up from Mexico, I wait down the street from the airport at Jack in the Box for her to let me know she’s ready. I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to text each other, but Jack in the Box’s Wi-Fi kicked in and we were able to text.
While I was at the restaurant it started raining buckets with lots of thunder and lightning, which is not unusual for Houston.
It took Noelia about an hour to get through customs, and another at least 30 minutes for me to get to her. The strange thing about Intercontinental is that it is always under construction, but nothing ever changes. Bumper to bumper traffic that is unusually slow moving.
I finally found her, and we headed home. The drive out of Houston wasn’t too bad both traffic and weather- wise. It had stopped raining. When we got to Hempstead, it started raining cats and dogs, windshield wipers going as fast as they could.
That white knuckled driving in pouring rain lasted until we got to Caldwell. To make matters worse, I guess my air conditioner froze up because it got pretty hot in the car. We rolled the windows down and turned off the AC to give it a break and drove through Blackjack down 908 to get back to town.
As soon as we got back into Rockdale my phone started working again. We stopped at Gonzales to eat dinner and, by the time we left, the AC was working again. So strange.
After living in Houston for 30 years, I had almost forgotten how much I hate that drive. There are so many places where it’s only one lane each way and the road winds around so much it is hard to pass slowpokes. Maddening.
And the part through Brenham is also crazy even though there are two lanes each way, but it’s still not large enough to handle the amount of traffic going to and from Houston on Sunday afternoon.
Noelia doesn’t really like Intercontinental but it’s the closest airport with direct flights to Veracruz, where her mother and brothers and their families live. She’s going to look for another airport.
-kwc I made a mistake in last week’s paper. I thought the hamburger fundraiser at Rockdale’s Community Market was last weekend but it’s actually this weekend on Saturday and they are raising money for Rockdale Youth Football and Cheer.
Homemade grilled hamburgers will be cooked to order, and you’ll get them with a side of chips and a drink for $10. If you’d like a cheeseburger instead it’s only one dollar more. My apologies if any of you want out thinking it was last weekend like I did.
Also on Saturday, Charlie and Pat Watson are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary at St. Joseph Catholic Church from 1 to 4 p.m. with refreshments provided, so stop by and wish them well.
If you’re in Thorndale on Saturday the Thorndale Band Boosters are having their annual bake sale and car wash fundraisers. The baked goods will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Thorndale Meat Market, and the car wash will be held at First Baptist Church during the same hours.
