100 YEARS AGO....

Rockdale schools led the way in Milam County with donations to the war effort as the system’s 75 boys and 96 girls contributed $258.55.

Dr. R. Zeidlitz finished his stint in the U.S. Army performing veterinary work and announced he would resume his practice in Rockdale on Dec. 15.

Birtie Elizabeth Gunn, two, was the latest Rock-dale area resident to die in the flu epidemic. The entire W. C. Gunn family had come down with the disease.

Agnes Cooke, daughter of Reporter Publisher John Esten Cooke was serving as the paper’s editor, bookkeeper, officer manager and ad solicitor. J.E. Cooke wrote: “The old man will continue to hold down the mechanical department until some printers get back from the army.”

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Rockdale ISD trustees were huddling with architects after all the bids on a bond construction project to build a new junior high, along with other renovations, came on over budget.

Rockdale’s new Community Chorus, organized through the RISD Community Education program and directed by Carolyn Willard, made its debut during the annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas events.

J. C. “Johnny” Andres, longtime county auditor, announced his retirement and District Judge Don Humble appointed Marguerite Michalka as his successor.

Lexington defeated Hull-Daisetta 28-13 to advance to the state Class A football quarterfinals, making 1978 the most successful grid season ever for LHS.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Tiger Head Football Coach Casey Creghan said he had always wanted to have Thanksgiving dinner in a field house—meaning his teams were still playing that deep into the season—and Big Blue did just that, two days before bowing to No. 1-ranked Newton in Class 3A regional action.

The Milam County Appraisal District made a counter offer to Alcoa one day before the aluminum company’s deadline to make such an offer in an out-of-court effort to settle a pending lawsuit over taxable values.

Brookshire Bros. still hadn’t made a final decision on whether to rebuild the Rockdale store leveled in a July fire, even though the previous week a company official had said a new store was “likely.”

A 48-year-old man wanted on an aggravated sexual assault of a child charge was arrested in Glendale, Arizona, and returned to Milam County to face charges.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Alcoa laid off an additional 380 employees at its Rockdale Operations, the largest single round of layoffs in connection with the company shutting down the local smelter.

Walter Pond, who was set to retire as Rockdale ISD superintendent after serving in that job for 20 years, was grand marshal of the annual Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade.

A Milam County Deputy Sheriff escaped injury when another vehicle ran over a 2-foot piece of iron rebar and flipped it through the windshield of his patrol car.

Carthage defeated Rock-dale in a Class 3A regional semifinal game but the 9-3 Tigers ended with their best season in a decade.
