100 YEARS AGO....

Internal Revenue Service Agent Capt. T. R. Stevic raided a Thorndale residence and found a large quantity of illegal alcohol (Prohibition had started) plus items believed related to the manufacture of alcohol.

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce reported a “strong probability” a potato curing facility would be located in Rockdale.

Residents of the Oakdale and Sand Grove areas were convicted in a Milano Justice-of-the-Peace court of failure to dip their cattle. Because the men had actually dipped some portion of their herds, the fine was dropped from $25 to $20.50.

James Barbazon of New York purchased Rockdale’s “The Alcove,” a cold drinks and confectionery business. Barbazon was offering a five-pound box of chocolates to “the lady of Rockdale or vicinity who supplies the best name for the new business.”

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Shell Oil Company signed a lignite mining contract to provide coal for what were envisioned as two 500-mega watt power plans to be built by Texland electric Cooperative.

About 1,400 persons toured the new atomizer at Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations. Billed as the largest of its kind in the world, the facility was to product aluminum powder.

A trio of gunmen held up Rockdale State Bank and Community Bank & Trust. All they got away with play money. It was all a stunt to promote Rockdale’s upcoming Jubilee Days celebration.

Substantial pay benefits were due about 1,400 members of United Steelworkers Local 4895 at Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations as a new three-year contract went into effect.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Milano was in mourning after the drowning death of 16-year-old Brandon Chapman during a church outing at Inks Lake in the Texas Hill Country.

Jennie Shields Richards, age 107, got an Honorary Degree of Citizenship during commencement exercises at The Institute For Teaching God’s Word.

A train-pickup collision in downtown Cameron killed two persons, one of them a Rockdale resident.

Larry Pipkin, head baseball coach of Rockdale High School, was named coach-ofthe-year in District 19AAA. Pipkin led the Tigers to an area championship.

TEN YEARS AGO.... Luminant won the three

Luminant won the threeweek trial in 20th District Court as a jury not only rejected Alcoa’s claim the power company owed it damages for failing to honor contracts, it ordered Alcoa to pay Luminant $10-million in damages. Luminant had not sought damages.

Over 1,000 persons attended funeral services for three young accident victims, held in the Rockdale K-C Hall.

Police were warning local businesses that a number of “very poor quality” counterfeit 20-dollar-bills were being passed in Rockdale.
