100 YEARS AGO…

On Friday morning of last week the patrons of the Rockdale Public Schools enjoyed a real treat in the little Christmas play put on by the pupils of the first, second and third grades of the Rockdale Public Schools. Altogether about three hundred people witnessed the affair.

The barn belonging to H.M. Luckey, who resides about 10 miles southwest of Rockdale, together with the contents was completely destroyed by fire. Origin of the fire unknown. Between 300 and 400 bushels of corn, together with several sets of harnesses were destroyed. The family was away from home at the time. The barn was insured.

Members of the W.O.W. Circle were entertained by Guardian McKeown in her home. A special feature of the evening was a Christmas tree with a lovely present for each member. Santa Claus appeared at the proper time and helped in the merriment of the evening. After several social games, refreshments of sandwiches, cake and hot chocolate were served. At a late hour and with many thanks to the hostess for the holly time the guests departed.

40 YEARS AGO…

Big shovels and little shovels were on hand during a red letter event for Rockdale’s senior citizens. It was ground-breaking time for the proposed new Senior Citizens Center.

“It was a Christmas present to my wife and children.” That’s the way State Representative Dan Kubiak of Rockdale described his decision last week to run for reelection to the Texas House of Representatives, in new district 13, rather than try for a state-wide office.

The New Hope Baptist Usher Board sponsored a party hosted by youth sponsor Mrs. Leroy Tindle at her home on Bigger Street. The festive mood was completed with the exchanging of gifts, serving of refreshments and making plans for a new year.

20 YEARS AGO…

Three Christmas cheer organizations have made the holidays a little brighter for about one in every eight people in Milam County. Christmas Round Up and Blue Santa, both based in Rockdale, and Thorndale Cares combined to deliver holiday goodies to 448 families containing about 1,559 persons, most of them children.

Rockdale’s first baby of 2002 would net prizes totaling $1,023 for his or her parents. The annual first baby contest, conducted by The Rockdale Reporter and sponsored by 46 local businesses, is for parents who live in Rockdale or who have a Rockdale mailing address.

10 YEARS AGO…

“If you do it right, once is enough.” That famous quote is attributed to Mae West—and she was talking about life, not egg shells and tuna cans—but the same philosophy applies to the hopes of Rockdale residents as they prepare to enter a new era in garbage collection Monday, two days into the new year. After many decades of twice-a-week garbage pickup, trash collection becomes once-a-week on Monday, along with a switch in contractors.

Three months after “dodging the bullet” on one set of new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules, Luminant’s Sandow power plants are awaiting word of their fate in regard to another.

Rockdale’s Kay Theatre Foundation, which is restoring the nearly 70-year-old former theatre, as a performing arts-civic meeting venue, has received a $15,000 grant from the Douglas B. Marshall Jr. Family Foundation of Houston.
