A number of Rockdale and other school of Milam County are expecting to attend the Texas State Teachers Association convention, according to W.A. Franklin, superintendent of the Rockdale schools, and Jim. F. Chadwick, of Cameron, who is superintendent of the Milam County schools. The convention will be held in San Antonio Nov. 27, 28 and 29, and is expected to be the largest and most significant in the history of the association.

Through the courtesy of Mr. Carlisle, Scarbrough & Hicks’ efficient advertising manager, the Rockdale public schools have on display in one of Scarbrough & Hicks large windows, a very interesting collection of the work of the students of the various grades and classes. The purpose of this display is to give everyone in town a chance to see just what the schools are doing, and it consists of drawings, posters, maps, themes and test papers, artistically arranged. In collecting and selecting the work for display Miss Fredonia Hairston was chairman of the primary department; Miss Cordelia Crouch chairman for the intermediate department and Miss Mary Catherine Hill chairman for the high school.

Mr s. F rank Bethea charmingly entertained The Bridge Club Tuesday afternoon at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett T. Kemp, on East Cameron Street. The reception rooms were rendered most attractive and inviting by the deft arrangement of bowls and wall vases filled with autumn tinted flowers. The enjoyable affair came to a close by the serving of the following delicious menu: chicken a la king, stuffed beets, fruit salad, chipped potatoes, hot rolls, pickles and cafe noir.

Great plans have been laid for a high school carnival to be held at the high school building and campus on Dec. 6. The student body is cooperating with the parents and teachers in an effort to make it the greatest school carnival ever held in Rockdale.

40 YEARS AGO

For the first time ever, Rockdale Works Alcoans have worked a million safe man-hours twice in one year. “This safety streak is significant for several reasons,” said Safety Manager Gary Griesbach. “First, it began in July, the hottest part of the year, a time when our safety record usually lapses. Second, these million man-hour periods have occurred back-to-back. Except for a lost work day injury in the middle, we’ve had well over 2 million safe man-hours. Third, in the past, it’s been extraordinary for this plant to have one million safe man-hours in a year, let alone two. Rockdale Works has become a company safety leader.

20 YEARS AGO

When Rockdale High School Big Blue Band takes the field at halftime of the first football game of 2005, they hope to be bigger and they will certainly be “blueer.” RISD trustees, meeting Monday in the Central Administration Building, okayed purchase of 110 new high school band uniforms, the first new band outfits in 12 years.

10 YEARS AGO

Faced with a declining tax base, and a lag in receiving state funds, the Rockdale ISD is preparing to slice a million dollars from its 2015-16 budget. Supt. Denise Monzingo led trustees through a complex, and occasionally impenetrable, maze of state financing Monday in a workshop before the board’s November regular session.
