Rockdale’s quota of handsome churches is to be augmented soon by a new $12,000 church home to be erected by the Christian Church. Contract for same was let this week to Harris & Copeland. The new building will occupy the site of the present old frame structure on West Bell Street where the church owns a beautiful and commodious lot. the work of tearing down the old structure has begun, and the congregation expects to be worshiping in its new home within three months.

A representative of the State Highway Commission was in consultation with A.F. Mitchell, county engineer, this week and Mr. Mitchell announces that the contract with the Wisconsin Bridge & iron Company, of Milwaukee, was approved by the Federal and State highway bureaus. The cost is to be $162,249.85 and it is to be completed within 300 working days from December 10th, which is the agreed time for work to begin. The bridge is located a short distance below Gause and is being built by Milam and Robertson counties with substantial assistance of the Federal and State Highway Commissions.

Miss Irma Dunnington was the gracious hostess to the Bridge Club, on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. M.R, Summers won the club prize, a beautiful pair of candle sticks and shades, the artistic hand work of the hostess. Miss Lottye Maie Phillips was awarded a novelty powder puff a s a g uest prize. A most delicious hot lunch was served, consisting of chicken croquets, stuffed potatoes, fruit salad, olives, hot biscuits and coffee. Miss Dunnington proves quite a charming hostess, and her affairs are always looked forward to with a great deal of pleasure.

40 YEARS AGO A Holiday Style Show and Luncheon sponsored by the Women’s Golf Association was held Friday at the Rockdale Country Club. Fashions were shown to an appreciative audience by Fashion Corner, Mary Ann Shoppe and Carolyn’s Kids and Gifts.

Linwood Acres Garden Club member Wanda Elliot presented Edna Matejowski, 1802 Murray, with the club’s sign which denotes the club’s “Yard of the Month” honor.

Coach Ed Abernathy’s poised Rockdale Tigers survived a three-overtime marathon with the Moulton Bearcatz Saturday to emerge as champs of the 29th annual RHJS Boys Tourney, claiming a 58-54 victory.

20 YEARS AGO

The nation’s largest private, for-profit ambulance service will take over emergency medical services in Milam County at midnight December 31. A nine-member committee, composed of representatives from the cities of Rockdale and Cameron and the Milam County commissioners court, unanimously recommended selection of American Medical Response (AMR) last Wednesday in a joint meeting of all three entities at the Williams Civic Center in Cameron.

Santa and Mrs. Claus (Tony and Barbara Walko) made a unique entrance downtown in Saturday’s lighted Christmas Parade, in a gleaming white carriage pulled by a gorgeous 18-hands-high Percheron horse provided by Angeli Carriages. Driver and “shotgun” were dad-and-daughter Larry and Emily Hahn. Hundreds lined the parade route all the way to Fair Park. Santa actually made three appearances in Rockdale Saturday as the town kicked off its Christmas season with numerous events.
