100 YEARS AGO
The little city of Thorndale was stunned, and a chock was felt all over Milam County Monday morning when it became known that Gus Newton, president and manager of the Thorndale Mercantile Company, had ended his life. Mr. Newton shot himself through the brain with a 38-caliber revolver while seated at his desk in his private office in his place of business at about 1:00 o’clock Monday morning. Death was instantaneous. A verdict of suicide was rendered following an inquest by the Thorndale Justice of the Peace.
Thursday afternoon Mrs. Hood Caldwell was delightful hostess to the Sans Souci Club and additional guests at her attractive suburban home, Twin Oaks. The home was decorated in holiday colors, while the score cards carried out the Happy New Year greeting. Mrs. Caldwell served a delectable salad course.
The Odd Fellows Cemetery Association will meet with Mrs. Linden Sledge on Friday, January 9, at 4:30 p.m.
A meeting of the Athletic Council was held Monday night, and they decided to give a banquet in honor of the football team. Sweaters will be awarded at this time to the lettermen.
Emory Camp Jr. is the proud owner of a new Ford coupe. Emory says that all the girls who were mad at him will probably start speaking again.
Mrs. A.J. Jackson of the Salty community celebrated her seventy-sixth birthday anniversary at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Laura Cook in Thorndale last Thursday, Christmas Day. The ingathering of children, grand-children and greatgrand- children from this and adjoining communities and other towns over the state was a great revival of memories especially to this grand old mother and her noble husband and it was a delightful occasion for all present.

The sho c ke d tow n of Thorndale gradually returned to normal this week in the aftermath of the brutal gunshot murder of a convenience store clerk in the early morning hours Thursday. “This town has never seen anything like this before,” Thorndale Police Chief said of the murder of 44-year-old Mamie White, whose body was found slumped behind the corner of the Thorndale Circle K. “It seems so pointless.”

Would you like to own a piece of Rockdale school history? Well, you can at very little expense. Rockdale High School’s FFA chapter is selling bricks from the old three-story building (one the high school, then the junior high) which was demolished last summer.
10 YEARS AGO
For the first time since the legendary Reel Drive-In Theater closed its doors in 1977, Rockdale residents can again “go to the movies” in their hometown. The Kay Theater, a 1940s venue which has been restored far beyond its Truman Era status by a dedicated group of volunteers, is ready to begin Tuesday “Classic Movie Nights” and Saturday children’s matinees. First movie night will be Tuesday, Jan. 20, with the Jack Lemmon- Tony Curtis-Marilyn Monroe comedy “Some Like it Hot.” The first kids matinee will be Saturday, Jan. 24, with “The Muppet Movie.”
