100 YEARS AGO…

Coach Magee, of Rockdale High School, met with the other high school coaches of this county in Cameron last Saturday, at which meeting the annual county tournament in boys basketball was arranged. the tournament will be held in Cameron at Lawless Green Athletic Field on Friday and Saturday of this week Feb. 6 and 7. Play will start at 10 a.m. Friday and it is though the final game will be reached about 3 p.m. Saturday. Gold medals will constitute the prizes, and the Rockdale Tigers contemplate winning the county championship.

The Patterson Produce Company of Dallas will have a poultry car in Rockdale next Monday, Feb. 9, buying through the undersigned merchants, any of whom will buy your poultry and give you the benefit of the carlot shipping price: Noack Grocery Co., Backhaus Bros., Farmers Union Warehouse Co., and C.M. Perry.

W.J. Henke, of Thorndale, is a new clerk in the grocery department of Scarbrough & Hicks Company. Mr. Henke was previously with the Thorndale Mercantile Company, having had four years’ experience with that firm. He will move his family here as soon as a suitable house can be secured.

Rockdale High School now boasts another man teacher in the person of Prof. Starling, recently of Austin, who will have charge of higher mathematics. Mr. Starling is a man of unusual scholarship and good experience. This is the first time in many years that the faculty has boasted of three male teachers.

40 YEARS AGO…

Ro ckd a l e s h i v e r ed through its second snow and ice storm over the weekend but emerged unscathed even as area drivers negotiated ice covered roads without major incident. The mercury dipped below freezing on Thursday, plunging 30 degrees overnight and didn't climb above 32 degrees until Sunday afternoon. In the interim a 1-1/2-inch snow and sleet storm coated area roads with ice and made travel conditions hazardous.

Alcoa is idling a second potline at its Rockdale Works due to continued price and inventory problems. The latest potline shutdown, effective Sunday, will result in an additional layoff of 70 employees, plant manager Jack Drake announced Friday.

20 YEARS AGO…

The late 1940s and early 1950s were a golden age for movie theaters in Rockdale. Back then movies were not just simple entertainment but a cultural event. The town boasted two movie theaters, the Dixie and the Kay Theater. The Kay on Main Street is all that remains of a bygone era, and a group of Rockdalians have started a foundation to rebuild and restore the neighborhood movie house to use as a cultural and performing arts center.

10 YEARS AGO…

T he M i l am A d u l t Resource Center (MARC) will observe its 50th anniversary of serving the Rockdale area with an open house Sunday afternoon at the center, 1705 Pecos on the grounds of Richards Memorial Hospital. Hours are 2 to 4 p.m. “Thank you Rockdale community for supporting the MARC Center for 50 years,” Ann King, MARC president, said. “Please join us on Sunday.”
