What was said to be the seventh killing in Milam County for the year occurred in the Briery community in the north part of the county, when O.S. Segrest was shot and killed by A. Oliphant. A shotgun and pistol were both used. The shooting took place in Segrest’s cotton patch and death was instantaneous. Both men were middle-aged tenant farmers and neighbors. Family trouble was alleged to have been the cause of the tragedy.
The Trades Day Committee of the Chamber of Commerce set Oct. 25 as the date on which to hold the big “Ford Trades Day” event which was advertised for Sept. 20 but postponed on account of rain. The new date was selected which would most nearly suite the convenience of everyone interested. By that date, under favorable weather conditions, the cotton harvest would be nearing a close and the people would have more time at their disposal. Also by then the public would very likely be in a mood to lay in their winter supplies, which could be done on Trades Day more cheaply than on any other day because of the great variety of special bargains offered by Rockdale merchants.
The Matinee Musical Club met Sept. 29 with Flora Sharp for the first program after the summer vacation. New officers were elected as follows: president, Mrs. P.H. Perry; vice president, Mrs. C.M. Perry; secretary, Mrs. E.A. Camp; recording secretary, Louise Hale; treasurer, Mrs. W.C. Marrs; parliamentarian, Mrs. D.C. Wallace. After the business meeting the program was rendered. Then the usual game of composers was played and Louise Hale was the lucky member, receiving a flower bowl as her reward. After this, the hostess served a salad course and punch.
