100 YEARS AGO…

Nine teams had signified their intentions of entering the county basketball tournament to be held in Rockdale Feb. 1 and 2—Cameron, Rockdale, Thorndale, San Gabriel, Sharp, Buckholts, Yarrellton, Gause and Jones Prairie—had all notified the director that they expect to be here for the tournament. Yarrellton seemed to be a decided favorite to win the county championship, while the other contenders seemed to stack up about even. Among the probable officials to referee the tournament were “Tiny” Kenn, captain of last year’s championship Aggie five, Tom Dennis of Texas and Teddy Lyons of Baylor. Keen if satisfactory to all coaches, would probably draw the assignment as he had expressed a willingness to come.

The Reporter was requested to announce that all poultry raisers or those interested in the poultry industry, were requested to meet at the Chamber of Commerce rooms in the city hall on Jan. 26 for the purpose of organizing the Rockdale Poultry Association. Members of the Rockdale Egg Circle were especially urged to attend.

We were sure that everyone who attended the previous Sans Souci party at the hospitable home of Mrs. J.Q. Baldridge, pronounced it the best ever. Notwithstanding the cold evening, the atmosphere inside the cheery home proclaimed warmth and comfort. A number of games of the ever-popular game of 42 were played, after which the club prizes were awarded to Dr. I.P. Sessions and Mrs. H.O. Quebe, while gust prizes went to Mrs. Lon Hudson and Mrs. R.L. Long of Navasota, At the close of the evening a salad course was served, consisting of chicken salad, sandwiches, pickles, fruit parfait a nd c offee, followed by an ice course, ice cream and cake.

40 YEARS AGO…

Triple Sec, a racehorse owned by Carrol Glaser and Linwood Mehaffey of Rockdale and Stanley Beard of Brenham, closed out his 2-year-old year in style Dec. 21 winning the $40,000 Sugar Bowl Handicap in New Orleans. Triple Sec has now won $283,782 as he entered his 3-year old year.

Kyle Barlow, RHS senior and son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Barlow of Rockdale, was named a 1984 award winner in mathematics by the U.S. Achievement Academy. He was to appear in the academy’s official yearbook. Barlow was nominated for the award by RHS math teacher Deborah Dean.

20 YEARS AGO…

Milam County’s unemployment rate fell 5.4 percent for December, the sixth straight month of decline, according to employment figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission.

10 YEARS AGO…

About 75 persons marched down Martin Luther King Street, one day in advance of the state and national holiday, in Rock-dale’s largest MLK Day Parade yet. “We thought we would move it up one day to try and get more participation,” Henry Miller, organizer, said. “It was a nice turnout.” Following the parade, food was served at Springfield Baptist Church. Lynda Ford provided outside music for the afternoon at the church.
