Members of Rockdale Volunteer fire Department with their three young lady sponsors as honored guests enjoyed their annual banquet. The affair was held at the Mrosko Café and the menu consisted of an old-fashioned turkey dinner, with all the necessary “fixin’s,” served family style. Covers were laid for 50. Mayor H.C. Meyer, some city officials, Rev. W.E. Copeland and The Reporter editor were special guests. Hon. E.A. Camp, president of the department, was toastmaster of the occasion and had fortified himself with a big assortment of new jokes appertaining to various of the members and guests. If hearty laughter is an antidote for over-eating there should have been no indigestion cases following the banquet.
The Matinee Musical Club had the first meeting of the year at the home of the new president, Mrs. T.S. Barkley. Ten members and one visitor, Miss Eleanor Lucas of Waco, responded to roll call with New Year’s resolutions, which caused much happy comment. After a short business session, a splendid musical program, portraying the various styles of compositions, was well rendered. An added number to the program by Eleanor Lucas was of unusual interest and quite a treat. An instructive musical game was enjoyed in which Flora Sharp proved most adept and was awarded a framed motto. A delicious plate was served and as the club adjourned each one expressed a feeling of brightest hopes for the coming year under such a capable presiding officer.
