By special arrangement the local Post of the American Legion secured the official U.S. Government picture of the World War—“America’s Answer,” which was to be shown one day at Maxie’s Theater on Feb. 9. The picture was made during the war by the U.S. Signal Corps, to be used at the time of making, officially by the War Department. The picture was in eight reels and constituted a complete, vivid portrayal of the war and the part played by America.
One of the most pleasing musical entertainments Rockdale had in years was at the City Hall auditorium where the Carr Concert Quartette, representing Central Music Co., appeared under the auspices of the Baptist Women’s Auxiliary.
As hinted at by The Reporter, the Trades Day Committee of the Chamber of Commerce signed a contract with Lt. Henry Toncray for an exhibition airplane stunt flight to be given in Rockdale on Feb. 12, which was regular monthly Trades Days.
The Tuesday Bridge Club and additional players enjoyed a delightful afternoon with Mrs. Lon Hudson. Amid the coziness, and glowing fires of the home, the enthusiastic players were oblivious to the crisp weather without. In the fames attractive Valentine score cards were used. The hostess served the following menu: fried oysters, wafers, chicken salad, sandwiches, olives, gelatin delight and coffee.
40 YEARS AGO…
Six Milam County history teachers, including Susie Piper of Rockdale, were honored by Milam County commissioner’s court as part of a statewide observance honoring Texas history teachers.
The Golden Girls Booster Club, supporters of the RHS drill team, held a dessert and game party in the Patterson Center as part of a fundraising project and the Golden Girls themselves dropped by to entertain. Proceeds from the party were used to buy accessories and equipment used by the Golden Girls in their performances at RHS football and basketball games.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale Elementary School now sported a huge new, colorful playscape, thanks to a $13,000 donation to the RISD from the Rockdale Parent-Teacher Organization. Recreation Services Corp. of Arlington employees assembled the playscape.
More than 100 friends, former members and members of Rockdale’s First Presbyterian Church joined in morning worship and an afternoon celebration worship of the congregation’s 50 years of worship and service.
10 YEARS AGO…
A giant outdoor music festival which has drawn the largest crowds in the history of Milam County—and provided a major economic boost in the post-Alcoa era—wouldn’t return in 2013.
The first phase of a major community project which would see a new Milano VFD Fire Station, emergency shelter and community meeting place was nearing completion.
