City Health Officer R.W. Wallis recently sent specimens of the city water from which Rockdale derives her drinking water to the State Health Officer for examination. In reply he received a letter from V.N. Ehlers, state sanitary engineer, giving the information that the specimen showed no trace of B. Coli or any other of the organisms belonging to that group, and pronouncing the water pure and safe.

“Out of the Darkness,” a new serial series by Charles J. Dutton, was to start in The Reporter. The story brought in John Bartley, an investigator of crimes. The talented detective returned from secret service work in the war, was immediately engaged by the governor of the state to ferret out some facts in connection with an application for a pardon. It seemed a small case, hardly justifying the employment of such a prominent sleuth, yet it led to something big; to a mystery which, for a time, baffled all of his keen abilities. Those who read a detective story in order to match their wits against the author’s, would find a rare treat in this new serial.

Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Camp were the very delightful host and hostess to the Ye Merrie Wives Club on Feb. 15. The Valentine theme was artistically featured in the decorations, table appointments and accessories, and was carried out in the delicious salad luncheon served at the close of the games of 42. After several games the attendees were surprised by Emory Camp Jr. and George Young bring in Valentines caps for each to don, and a corsage of red and white carnations for each lady and boutonnieres for each gentleman.

The City of Milano Volunteer Fire Department, 48 members strong and with two fire-fighting units, was operating in the Milano area. Firemen showed off their newest acquisition, a 1978 pickup and pumper. Volunteers are still raising funds to pay for the 11-horsepower pump with 300-gallon tank and were to sponsor a chili supper on March 5 at Milano High School.

It was a night of magic and music when the Noon Lion’s Club put on its annual talent show in the RHS auditorium to raise funds for the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department and its own charities.

It’s a record but don’t look for any celebrations. Gas prices were at an all-time high in Rockdale and many other locations in the wake of concerns over a war in Iraq, instability in Venezuela and other market factors. Before the previous two weeks, prices had never topped $1.50 per gallon at all Rockdale pumps. (Editor’s note: there was a photo accompanying this news which showed regular at $1.56, plus at $1.66, premium and diesel at $1,77 per gallon. My how times have changed.)

The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) was ready to put a new face on things. Literally. Meeting in the Patterson Civic Center, MDD directors appointed a committee to oversee a facade improvement program designed to assist business owners who want to improve the interface between their facilities and their customers.
