100 YEARS AGO…
The regular directors meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was rain, necessitating the postponement of election of officers for the ensuing year. The following directors were elected to serve the Chamber during the upcoming year: Fred H. Graves, E.A. Camp, John E. Cooke, H.T. Coulter, J.O. Newton, C.R. Issacs, J.W. Garner, W.E. Gaither, J.P. Sparks, T.D. Rountree, R.C. Allen, Lin Hudson, C.E. Wisecup, W.A. Coffield, Ed G. Simms, E.T. Kemp, L.B. Jones, C.K. Stribling, P.H. Perry, Eddie Backhaus, W.E. White and M.N. Stricker. These directors were to elect a president, vice president and treasurer, and would employ and executive secretary for the ensuing year. These selections would have been made but the bad weather prevented a meeting being held.
Matchless Milam was soakingly wet again after a one-inch rain followed by a light norther. It began raining and continued slowly and soakingly with a cold northeast wind prevailing. After a two-week “drouth,” farmers were glad to see the rain but were hoping for a few weeks of cotton planting weather.
Mrs. Dora Poole moved her millinery store to the Lowenstein building on Main Street next door to the Quebe & Prewitt drug store. Here Mrs. Poole had fitted up one of the most attractive millinery establishments Rockdale had ever seen. The building had been overhauled and refinished by the carpenters, plasterers and painters, and Mrs. Pool was comfortably established therein with one of the most complete spring stocks she had ever carried in all her long years of business experience in Rockdale.
40 YEARS AGO…
It was election day in school districts and municipalities in the Rockdale area, and most eyes were turned to the seven-member race for the Rockdale school board. The school board race features a three-man race for Place 3, with former trustee Allen Menke vying with Rod Spence and Mike Foster. Miller Bassler was opposed by Charles Robinson in Place 4, and incumbent Elizabeth Holloway had drawn write-in opposition from Bill Schultz in Place 5.
RHS freshman Susan Wallis stroked her way to her third consecutive varsity tournament win of 1983, posting the girls’ single crown in the first annual Rockdale High School Invitational Tennis Tournament held at city courts.
20 YEARS AGO…
Drawing top honors at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Banquet were Jim Currey as Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Mike Korenek won Citizen of the Year, and the Greater Rockdale E-Access Team (GREAT) was named Organization of the Year.
Rockdale Federal Credit Union recorded another successful year, despite a down economy in 2002, board members told a crowd of about 300 at its annual meeting held at the KC Hall.
10 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale’s Fair Park would again host the annual Nature Festival, sponsored by the El Camino Real chapter of Texas Master Naturalists. Dates were April 12-13. Theme for 2013 was “Snakes of Milam County” with several speakers and exhibits focusing on reptiles.
