100 YEARS AGO…
A bill in the Texas legislature approved and filed by the governor included the measure fixing the maximum speed of motor vehicles on country highways at 35 miles per hour against the present 25 miles per hour limit. The bill will become effective June 12.
April 9 was the regular monthly “Trade Days” in Regal Rockdale and from all over Matchless Milam people are expected to gather in response to the big merchandise bargain events advertised by progressive businessmen. Every store in Rockdale would participate in this bargain giving festival. The Chamber of Commerce was behind the movement and every business house in the city is cooperating. A Slow “Ford Race” was to be staged in the business part of town. The Ford car making the slowest time would win a cash prize of $5. A second prize of $2.50 would also be given. Another feature would be a “potato race,” in which first, second and third prizes of $2.50, $1.50 and $1 would be given. The attention of our readers was particularly directed to the big double-page spread in which was given a list of bargains offered by the various stores.
Mrs. E.B. Phillips was charming hostess to the Scrap Book Club. The already handsome home was further beautified by an arrangement of peach blossoms and ferns. Forty-two was the chosen game of the evening, for which the tally cards were hand painted in spring flowers and the score pads were large pansies in shower effect. Various Easter stockers were used for each game won. At conclusion of games table prizes were given. A fancy box of powder was cut by Mrs. Clyde Franklin; Mrs. R.W. Wallis was given an attractive sautoir; Mrs. L.P. Porter received a decorated fan; a lovely corsage went to Mrs. I.P. Sessions.
40 YEARS AGO…
The City of Rockdale’s Mill Street water tower wore a new Easter bonnet as part of a project to renovate the city’s oldest elevated storage tank. R.E. Dow and Sons of Mineral Wells, contractor for the project, brought in a crane from Austin Rigging Co., to lift the new top to the summit of the 165-foot tower.
Rockdale School District voters turned out in near record numbers to elect three members—two newcomers and one incumbent— in a hotly-contested, seven- candidate school board race. Place 5 incumbent Elizabeth Holloway polled 739 votes to narrowly defeat challenger Bill Schultz who drew 712 as a write-in candidate. Rod Spence and Miller Bassler won by fairly large margins.
20 YEARS AGO…
Students at Milano High School were living a dream that finally became a reality. Classes began at the new 50,000-square-foot high school building, more than five years in the making. The new facility featured 12 classrooms, a gymnasium, lunchroom and plenty of office space.

A two-year-old mystery was solved when a partial skeleton found north of Cameron on Jan. 13, 2011, was positively identified as Miguel Regalado-Jaramillo, a 26-year-old immigrant from Mexico who resided on FM 979 in Milam County.
The 12th annual MARC Run, sponsored by Bad To The Bone Riders of Rockdale, was to take place on April 13 at The Ranch in Rockdale, organizer Charles Starr said. The annual ride would benefit The MARC (Milam Adult Resource Center) of Milam County serves all Milam County Adult Residents with physical and learning disabilities.
