Following heavy rains and fed no doubt by heavier rains on the headwaters, Little River overflowed its bottoms for several days. Automobile traffic between Cameron and Rockdale was suspended during that time. The San Gabriel also overflowed, while Brushy Creek pulled a similar stunt. This was the second overflow for Brushy Creek this month. The continued rains and these overflows have greatly delayed farm work and will necessitate much replanting of corn. Not a great deal of cotton had been planted, but practically all that had been put in the ground would have to be replanted.

The Women’s Progress Club made a $50 donation to the American Legion Carlyle Post to be applied to their street fund. “We know of no work at present that could be done that would give results to all as this street work is doing, and we are taking this means of showing our appreciation. Remember that you can always count on our interested and cooperation in all your good works, for it is our purpose to serve,” said Susanna Kirk Hudson, president.

The Matinee Musical Club met in regular session on April 14, with Louise Hale. All nature was telling of spring, so it was very appropriate that this meeting was a springtime party. Responses to roll call were spring sonnets and thus were heard some of the most beautiful word pictures of this happy season of the year. An appreciated musical program giving the message of the springtime in song and instrumental numbers was one of the best of the year’s programs. In the musical contest Mrs. Gentry, proving the most adept, was honored with a lovely violet corsage. Miss Hale most graciously served refreshments of brick cream and angel cake. Plate favors were violets, the flower of spring.

20 YEARS AGO… Paul Luckey of Rockdale

Memorial Co. was honored by Jack Lawler, editor of State Trooper magazine for his continuous work of providing granite memorials to commemorate every state trooper who has died in the line of duty. “Since about 1996 the Luckey family, Paul and his sisters Carol and Linda, have made and donated granite markers for each one,” Lawler said.

The Carson & Barnes Circus was at Apache Pass for shows, with a portion of ticket sales benefiting the Rockdale Rotary Club. As part of an effort to save and honor endangered elephants, persons who donate grooming items or bread for elephants were admitted free and a 17-year-old trapeze artist sang her soon-to-be released song “I Am The Circus,” which would also benefi t circus elephants.
