100 YEARS AGO…

In reference to the matter of annual spring clean-up day for Rockdale as ordered by the city council, Mayor H.C. Meyer asked The Reporter to state that he was delaying issuing the proclamation until the closing exercises of the public school and other conflicting dates were over, and he would issue the proclamation soon, accompanying it with the naming of committees and suggestions for the furtherance of the day’s work.

Scoutmaster N.H. Melbert had his troop of Boy Scouts out with hammers breaking up the rocks on the street recently graveled by the American Legion. The boys put in some good work and rendered an appreciated service to the community.

Fred H. Graves, cashier of the Rockdale State Bank, prominent in all of Rockdale’s business activities for the past decade, good man and good citizen, died suddenly at his home. His death was attributed to acute indigestion, to attacks of which he had been long subject. He suffered a similar attack less than three weeks prior and came very near passing away at that time, but had been slowly recuperating, and only a few minutes before he died he remarked to his wife at the breakfast table that he was feeling better than usual.

The graduation exercises of the Rockdale Colored School were to be held on at New Hope Baptist Church. Principal Allen and associates prepared a good program, which would be given in the following issue. These closing exercises always drew a good attendance of all the people of Rockdale and the entertainments were always interesting.

40 YEARS AGO… Piggly Wiggly supermarket closed its doors threeand- one-half months after a new management group took control of the local store. Owners refused to comment on the closing. The new management took over the Rockdale store Feb. 20 after buying five stores, two in Bryan and one each in College Station, Hearne and Rockdale, from Malone & Hyde Corporation, which had earlier bought out the nationwide Piggly Wiggly franchise.

Paula Mireles was valedictorian and Susan Grindle salutatorian of the 120-candidate graduating class of 1983 at Rockdale High School, according to Principal Walter Pond.

20 YEARS AGO…

During their annual drive, Rockdale city and rural letter carriers collected and delivered over 2,200 pounds of food, which was stocked at Rockdale Christian Services food pantry which served the needy. Carriers thanked area residents for their “generous support” of the project.

10 YEARS AGO…

John King was elected mayor of Rockdale in a three-person race that turned out to be almost a carbon copy of the last mayoral race in 2010. Nathan Bland claimed a west-ward council position in a matchup of political newcomers while east ward council member Joyce Dalley was re-elected.

American Legion Carlyle Post 358 was to host Rockdale’s annual Memorial Day observance on May 27 at Wolf Park. Les Davenport, vice-commander said names of Milam County service personnel who died in all wars would be read by Rockdale High School students.
