100 YEARS AGO....

Judge W. C. Davis of Bryan was to be the featured speaker as the Milam County Prohibition Campaign formally opened at the Cameron Methodist Church. (Prohibition was to begin on Jan. 17, 1920).

The Reporter published a history of First Baptist Church noting the church was organized in 1876 with 18 charter members including Rev. B. B. Baxter and Civil War veteran Col. W. B. Woody.

Rockdale defeated Taylor 9-8 in a “rattling good” baseball game featured the pitching of N. E. Alford. The Reporter noted: “In the last half of the last inning, Taylor had two men out, their best runner on third and their best hitter at bat but Zeke tightened up and struck out the batter.”

The story began: “Old Jupe Pluvius Esq. busted his water wagon for good yesterday.” That meant it rained. “Conditions for farmers have never been better,” The Reporter reported.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

City Council members gave their consulting engineer a go-ahead to call for bids on a new water tower.

Rockdale ISD trustees posted a notice declaring an impending vacancy at the superintendent position where Dr. W. C. Vincent had resigned to accept the superintendent job in the Gainesville ISD.

In their third straight month to grapple with bank depository bids, Milam County commissioners acted and named Citizens National Bank of Cameron as the sole depository for county funds.

Donna Douglas, one of the stars of the mega-hit television show “The Beverly Hillbillies,” visited Milano.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Hail, downed tree limbs and high winds roared through Rockdale on two consecutive days along with more than three inches of rain.

An exact replica of Scarlett O’Hara’s “curtain dress” was featured in a fund-raiser for library expansion at the Patterson Civic Center. The event, which also included a display of rare books from the collection of Rockdale benefactor the late Dr. George Hill Patterson, raised over $3,000.

City council members threatened legal action against the operators of the Roger Hashem Juvenile Justice Center over clogs in the city sewer they said were caused by young inmates flushing items.

Rockdale swept Columbus in a two-game series to win a bi-district baseball title and were set to tangle with Mexia at area.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Rockdale voters were about to head to the polls in an election to decide whether to create a new Municipal Development District to be funded with a half-cent sales tax which was currently going to Richards Memorial Hospital.

The Sandow 5 Power Plant project was termed “97 percent complete” and was a couple of tests away from being fired with coal.

A swine flu outbreak had resulted in a death in Cameron County (Brownsville in the lower Rio Grande Valley) and the Milam County Health Department had received calls from some persons concerned that the death was in the (our) Cameron area.

The University Interscholastic League placed a moratorium on school extracurricular activities until the flu epidemic abated.
