A point of interest: at no time during spring was there a single wiggler found in Ham Branch or any of its tributaries. This seemed to show that the committee on malarial control had done its work well and so pronounced the Health Department in Austin. But this did not indicate that there were no mosquitoes or that there would be no mosquitoes in Rockdale. A few days carelessness on the part of individuals in or around their home could soon produce mosquitoes.

A delightful salad and ice cream course was served.

There can be some emotional moments in the annual Awards Night program in the RHS Auditorium, but not many like this years. County Agent Cheryl Walker presented the first Chris Holcombe Memorial Scholarship in memory of her sister, longtime County Agent Chris Holcombe, who died Jan. 3 after a nine-year battle with breast cancer. Recipient was RHS senior William Dean, who, like hundreds before and since, considered himself one of “Chris’s Kids.” The Milam County 4-H Foundation sponsored the $500 scholarship.
