A number of Rockdale people were entertained at Randle Lake when the Camp Fire Girls gave one of their beautiful and impressive ceremonials. Those present—family and friends—had been invited by the girls and their guardians to spend time with the young ladies and to enjoy an outing on the lake. (Editor’s note: Randle Lake is mentioned often in The Reporter during this time period. I have searched but found no information about a lake around Rockdale with that name.)

Monroe Burkhart of Thorndale, who was charged with burning the businesses that were destroyed by fire in Thorndale several months ago and with the robbery of the Fisher Dry Goods store, was given five years in the penitentiary in the district court on the charges of arson. He was given two years each on charges of theft and burglary. He plead guilty to all three charges. There were hundreds of people from all over the county present during the trial.

Mrs. Lon Hudson was hostess to the Tuesday Bridge Club. At the conclusion of the series of interesting games, Mrs. M.R. Summers held club score and was given a pair of silk hose. Mrs. Hudson, assisted by her niece, Ruth Kirk, served a delicious luncheon consisting of fried chicken, French potatoes, hot biscuits, apricot salad, sandwiches and iced tea.

Milam County’s new home demonstration agent, Gladys Henry, came in and immediately assumed her duties. Miss Henry was from Harris County and was thoroughly posted and equipped for work. She was to make headquarters in Cameron, but her duties would take her to all parts of the county. Any community desiring her services would receive same on demand.

She graduated from Rockdale High School, remembered the war vividly and couldn’t forget the day the president was assassinated. She was in town for the 49th Rockdale Homecoming and she sat down to reminisce. Lots of people may have those same memories, you think? Not exactly. The lady in question graduated from Rockdale High School in 1908, the war she remembered was the Spanish-American and the presidential assassination was McKinley’s. Her name was Aileen Eads Childs; she was 93 going on immortality and she packed a remarkable amount of living into the last century.

Rockdale High School sophomores met the challenge of the new Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, scoring well above the state average in their first-ever TAKS test.

The home of Ed and Mozell Williams, 1916 Redbud, was yard-of-the-month in May in the monthly award bestowed by the Linwood Acres Garden Club.

More digits, more dialing, maybe a little more cussin’. Ten-digit dialing arrived in the 512 area code—including Rockdale, of course—and area residents were coping with trying to make their flying fingers manage with 43 percent more numbers than they’re used to for a local call.
