100 YEARS AGO…

In order to supply a demand for instruction in the studies pertaining the elementary grades by students of Rockdale Public Schools who desired to make up additional credits during the vacation season, Mrs. C.G. Jenness opened a six-week term of school in the old primary school building on North Main Street. Instruction would be given in any of the elementary grade courses. Mrs. Jenness asked all prospective pupils to meet her at the primary school building to arrange courses so that all may be in readiness for work the following week.

The American Legion’s first “amateur night” was very successfully carried out at Maxey Theatre. While the audience was almost as large as the boys had expected, it was a very enthusiastic one and heartily encored the different numbers. The program consisted of musical sons and jokes. Bob Hale, Rockdale’s popular and talented violinist, rendered “la Paloma” in his usual excellent style. Mrs. Hale sang a very quietly “Granny” and received the unqualified approval of the audience.

Sheriff Drue S. Rogers, and deputies Will Little and Noah Kennedy captured five men, a still and some whiskey on the Brashear Farm on the Waco road about three miles from Cameron and Little was shot and seriously injured while making the arrest. He was taken to the Cameron Hospital and was expected to make a full recovery.

40 YEARS AGO…

Peace Lutheran Church was to celebrate its centennial with a day of special services, 100 years after it was founded in a small German immigrant community north of Rockdale.

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department received an unexpected, and appreciated, donation of $10,000 from the estate of the late Helen Ryan, a long-time VFD supporter. Fire Chief Earl Whitmore accepted the check from attorney Carol Glaser, executor of the Ryan estate.

20 YEARS AGO… To commemorate Alcoa reaching its goal of planting one million trees in a company- wide project, Rockdale Operations officials planted a tree at the Chamber of Commerce. The tree was purchased from the Down Home Ranch, a Down’s Syndrome home facility in Williamson County, which had a contract to provide 50,000 reclamation trees to Rockdale Operations.

10 YEARS AGO…

After a delay of nearly half an hour in order for a quorum to be present, new mayor John King, along with re-elected council woman Joyce Dalley and newly-elected councilman Nathan Bland, were sworn into office. City secretary Terry Blanchard administered the oath of office and presentations were made to outgoing mayor Dr. Larry Don Jones and councilwoman Toby Johnson.
