100 YEARS AGO…

The commissioners court—in response to petition from citizens of Thorndale— passed an order calling for an election to be held on July 21 on the matter of incorporation. Thorndale has never been incorporated and the public-spirited citizens of that thriving city have at last decided that it was about time she was taking off her swaddling clothes and coming out as a full-fledged little city, with municipal government to take charge of the many necessary details of town building confronting the community.

The Re por t e r was requested to announce that there would be a big get-together picnic of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of all Milam County at San Gabriel. There would be a basket picnic in the afternoon with supper. The program was to be given by the Girls’ Glee Club from the odd Fellows home at Corsicana. The principal address of the occasion would be delivered by Lt. Gov. T.W. Davidson.

The Fourth of July was celebrated in Rockdale by everybody taking a holiday. All places of business were closed and nearly everybody went somewhere. Lexington with her big celebration drew a big Rockdale crowd, while automobile parties were numerous at other places. Many went fishing, while others remained at home enjoying a quiet holiday.

Dr. and Mrs. T.D. Rountree entertained the members of Ye Merrie Wives Club and a few other friends with an “84” party. The hostess was assisted in receiving by Mrs. H.O. Quebe. Six tables were arranged on the beautiful lawn for the players, the scores being marked by petite Miss “Peaches” throughout 18 spirited games. An elaborate twocourse luncheon was served by the hostess assisted by Paulena Rountree and Dorothea Phillips.

40 YEARS AGO…

A 23-year-old former Gause resident was in Milam County Jail after being charged in connection with the bombing of four Milam County churches. Norris Eugene Moss was arrested by members of the Houston Police Department arson squad on a warrant from Justice of the Peace Doris Allen, issued after an investigation by the Milam County Sheriff’s Department.

20 YEARS AGO…

The long-awaited cleanup from the Dec. 11, 2002, Arledge Antiques-Ballard Carpets Etc. downtown fire began. Adjacent Citizens National Bank (CNB) purchased the building and has contracted for the cleanup. Mike Vance, CNB president, said the bank was looking at several options for the lot. He said the next task was to replace CNB’s fire-damaged west wall.

10 YEARS AGO…

Milano had a police department. An idea that had been 10 years in the making became a reality on the Fourth of July when Police Chief Colin Owen began patrolling the streets of Milano.

There was no professional fireworks display this July 4 in Milam County but a Rockdale- area venue was offering a “bring your own” opportunity. Apache Pass, seven miles northwest of Rockdale on FM 908, was to open for a day on the San Gabriel River and those who brought fireworks could shoot them for about two hours.
