Postmaster Elmer I. Wade took over the local post office from Herman P. Talley, and the affairs of the office were running along as smoothly as usual. Mr. Wade was assistant postmaster under Mr. Talley for several years, leaving that position to go on the road as post office inspector. He was thorough in his knowledge of the work and, having taken training under Mr. Talley, patrons of the office could rest assured that they would receive the same courteous and accommodating attention they always had.

Note the display ad of Scheihing’s Café: Mrs. Scheihing was opening the café for business and was cordially soliciting patronage. The furniture, fixtures, as well as the building, both inside and out, were being thoroughly renovated and painted pure white. This was the old Kennedy restaurant next door to City Pantitorium.

There was a rattling good game of baseball out at Sharp between Sharp and Heidenheimer. Mr. Reichert was manager of the Sharp team and assembled a strong bunch of players. Arthur Rosenberg wore the mask, while Ford Green of Rockdale pitched. Alford and Blackburn of Rockdale also played on the team. Hope Camp Jr. of Austin High School played third base. For Heidenheimer, Hagler, the underhanded pitcher from Rogers, did the mound duty. Baseball fans got their money’s worth.

Those attending the big I.O.O.F. reunion and picnic at San Gabriel reported one of the most enjoyable affairs ever staged in that community, which had the reputation of staging strictly Class A picnics. The picnic dinner was flanked by quantities of the very best quality barbecued meats, and the usual brand of San Gabriel hospitality was in evidence.

After months of negotiations, the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s request for a new fire department apparently came to an end as the city council approved a plan to donate to firemen the northwest corner of the municipal park. According to the plan, which was unanimously okayed, firemen would receive 15,000 square feet of land at the park— which also contained the city swimming pool and tennis courts—plus $25,000.

Triple Sec, a thoroughbred owned by Carroll Glaser and Linwood Mehaffey of Rockdale and Stanley Beard of Brenham, breezed to a win in the Texas Stallion Stakes at Louisiana Downs to become the second richest 2-year-old in the nation. The $52,680 Triple Sec win in Texas Stallion increased his lifetime earnings to $228,794.

While the car-dealer attire moved from coat, tie and Fedora hats to casual shirts and shorts, the family atmosphere at Miller-Starnes remained as the as the Rockdale company celebrated its 40 years of business.

The saga over the downtown Cameo Building’s fate took yet another twist when the city council, which last month ordered the structure torn down, approved a plan to let owner Gloria Thrasher proceed with restoration. But there were strict deadlines to meet and the motion, by councilman Willie Phillips, specified if any deadline was missed the building—damaged when a 125-year-old brick firewall collapsed last Aug. 29-30—would be razed within 90 days.
