100 YEARS AGO…

Mr. and Mrs. O.K. Phillips entertained the Ye Merrie Wives Club with a garden party on their beautiful lawn. Under the stately palms and blooming cedars and surrounded on all sides with banana plants and myriads of beautiful flowers one felt the enchantment and inspirations as though in far away Hawaii. Mrs. Clyde Franklin served refreshing punch to the guests on entering. Forty- two was the diversion for the evening. After 10 spirited games, Mrs. T.D. Rountree received a white wicker basket filled with pink roses as a club prize. Mr. E.B. Phillips received a silver pencil as gents club prize. Mrs. Robert Lowenstein won the guest prize, a beautiful basket of pink Radiance roses. Dr. E.A. Swafford, as guest prize, received a bill folder. Pink and white ice cream, decorated with miniature fans, and angel food cake were served by Mrs. Phillips.

The Board of Trustees of the Rockdale Public Schools was called in special session to receive the resignation of Supt. J.M. Hodges, who asked to be released from his contract in order that he might accept a better position with the public schools of Tyler. The release was granted, and Mr. Hodges resignation accepted, and the board immediately and unanimously elected C.G. Green of Huntsville to fill the vacancy. Mr. Green was communicated with by wire and his formal acceptance was received.

In a very closely contested election held in Thorndale, the town of Thorndale voted to incorporate with 120 votes for and 110 against. It was contemplated to adopt the aldermanic form of city government with a mayor and four aldermen. The result of the election was due to the activity of the women on election day.

40 YEARS AGO…

Norris Moss, 34-year-old Houston resident who had been charged in connection with a series of church fire bombings during the July 4th weekend, was indicted by a Robertson County grand jury. Moss was indicted on two counts of arson in connection with the July 5 fires of Shiloh Baptist near Franklin and the Hearne Masonic Hall which was being used by the Hearne Church of God in Christ.

Miss Texas was to be here for all three days of the 1983 Rockdale Fair, scheduled Oct. 20-21-22 and shaping up to be bigger and better than ever, Fair Association president John Hughes announced.

20 YEARS AGO…

Rockdale High School and Rockdale Elementary School were in poor condition and were nearing the end of useful lives. Building new schools would be more cost effective than repairing them. Those were the preliminary conclusions of a facilities study presented to Rockdale ISD trustees by Dr. Ned Walton of Walton & Associates. The study was one of several requested by community members serving on last year’s Strategic Planning Initiative boards.

10 YEARS AGO…

A bizarre accident caused the Springf ield Baptist Church bell tower to lie in ruins after a Lincoln Navigator failed to stop at the Plum-Third Street intersection.
