called attention to the half-page display ad concerning the Sixth annual Paramount Week, which was to start the following week. All over the U.S. this demonstration would enlist the support of more than 17,000 theaters. During the week of Sept. 2-8, they would exhibit only those pictures which represent the conscientious efforts of motion picture producers to improve the artistic, intellectual and moral level of the screen. The Dixie Theater was the Rockdale theater participating in this big national event. Manager Matson was the authorized Paramount Theater and, in connection with the advertisement mentioned, would be found his entire September bookings of all Paramount features.

The hide of a rattlesnake more than six feet long was on display in the window of the Scarbrough & Hicks grocery department. The rattler was killed by William Gee and Fritz Doss out on the Yegua recently. It was one of the largest snakes of the species ever seen here, with 12 rattlers. The hide measured 10 inches across which gave some idea of the size of the snake.

Rockdale gained a valuable new citizen in the person of Wade McCoy of the Tracy community. Mr. McCoy bought the Bob Caywood home and was engaged in moving his family to town. Our excellent school was the magnet which attracted Mr. McCoy and The Reporter joins in extending him a welcome.

Coach H.B. Hughes of the Rockdale High School came in from Dallas and would busy himself with matters pertaining to his position as principal and athletic coach. Mr. Hughes asked The Reporter to issue a call for a “Pep Meeting” which would be held at the Chamber of Commerce rooms. All students expecting to participate in any form of athletics the coming term were requested to attend the meeting.

40 YEARS AGO…

Hurricane Alicia struck Rockdale a glancing blow, but the dying storm did cause some brief flooding as it dumped 4.6 inches of rain on the town, much of it in a two-hour period. Power supply remained steady and, except for a few downed limbs and a brief closing of one major city street, it was pretty much business as usual as the southwestern end of the storm sideswiped Milam County.

Rockdale native Theresa White was the new assistant girls coach at RHS. White, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.C. White, was a 1978 graduate of RHS where she was a member of the Tigerette basketball and track teams. She formerly held the RHS school record in the 200-meter dash.

20 YEARS AGO…

Rockdale’s historic former depot wasn’t open as a museum yet but received its first permanent exhibit as volunteers carefully guided a 1948 Missouri-Pacific caboose onto a siding of rail on the property.

10 YEARS AGO…

Exactly two weeks after she was arrested by Rockdale police and charged with causing the death of 2-yearold Alexandria “Alex” Hill, a girl in her foster care, Sherill A. Small was indicted for capital murder by a Milam County Grand Jury. While capital murder could carry the death penalty, Prosecutor Bill Torrey told The Reporter he didn’t see it being pursued in this case.
