One of the most important deals in Rockdale business district real estate in recent years was closed when W.E. Gaither purchased the vacant lots, corner of Cameron and San Gabriel Streets, the consideration being $3,000. The property adjoined the post office and was better known as the “old Cottage Hotel corner.” It was sold to Mr. Gaither by the Mrs. Julia E. Robinson estate.
The second week of the new term of Rockdale Public School witnessed all classes settled down to regular routine, despite the crowded condition of some of the grades. The first week showed the absolute necessity of an additional teacher in the high school department and the school board called a special session to authorize Supt. Green to employ a teacher of mathematics. Mr. Green put out inquiries to that end.
A very delightful time was shown to the guests who attended an informal porch dance in the home of Preston Perry Jr. Everyone enjoyed dancing on the large porch and retreating the punch bowl between dances. All were sorry when it came time to leave as it was the last time some of the young people would be together this year as many of them were going away to school.
Account of the epidemic of typhoid fever in several Texas towns and cities, attention was called to the gravity of the same and advised the imperative need of giving the utmost attention to your water and milk supply, the two greatest factors in the typhoid germ. Our city water had three consecutive monthly bacteriological examinations and our water was pronounced by our state’s bacteriologist as being A-1, free from all diseased germs and suitable for drinking.—R.W. Charlie Martin, school superintendent and Milano’s first mayor, may be gone but he was still a part of the town. Charlie Martin Park, located near the elementary school, was the focal point of fund-raising activities which raised more than $1,000 for the Martin park development, plus another $1,475 for the Charlie Martin Memorial Scholarship fund.
The 50th year of football at Tiger Field, RHS stadium, was marked with special guests at the Rockdale-Elgin game—members of the 1934 Tigers, the first team to play at the field. The ’34 team members present were linemen jack Ferguson, Malcolm Gee, Ernest Cass, Harris Neely, Vernon McGuyer, Rufus Graves, Tommy Coffi eld and running backs Harvey Dean (who scored the first touchdown at Tiger Field), Boyd Middleton, Graham Kyle, Alvin Currey and Weldon Williams.
20 YEARS AGO…
Liz Carpenter had faced everything in her life with a sense of humor—from some of the darkest moments in the career of her boss, President Lyndon Baines Johnson, to her own ordeal with breast cancer. “Humor is important,” she told a crowd of about 160 at the Patterson Civic Center. Her visit to Rockdale was sponsored by Friends of the Library as a gift back to the public which supported the city library’s expansion and renovation.

Four per sons wer e appointed to the Rockdale Municipal Development District board, including city council member Joyce Dalley, by the council during a special session. New board candidates Dalley, Adam Straznicky and Trent Wages and holdover Bobby Pelzel were elected in separate votes.
