YEARS AGO 100 YEARS AGO…

The chief business of the board of directors at the Chamber of Commerce meeting, at which 10 members answered to roll call, was the discussion of the road situation as it affects Rockdale business interests. Facts were presented by Dr. Sessions in regard to past efforts made to bring about industrial development based on the huge fireclay deposits underlying the lignite strata.

Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Vance entertained Ye Merrie Wives Club and several additional guests with 42. Baskets and bowls of pink and red radiance roses, together with ferns, lent a floral charm to the rooms where the tables were placed for the players. The following menu was served: chicken salad, pickles, fruit salad, potato chips, hot rolls and coffee.

Conn R. Isaacs’ new Ford Sedan was stolen from in front of First National Bank. Parties coming on the Lexington road reported having met a man driving a Ford Sedan at a very fast gait and, acting on this clue, local officers located the car at Giddings near which town it had been abandoned when the gas tank ran dry.

Coach Hughes took his High School Tigers down to Hearne for a game but was outmatched. Rockdale played only 11 men while Hearne put the same number of players in the field and one on the sidelines. This extra one-man handicap was sufficient to give the game to Hearne by a score of 7-6. Had it not been for Hearne’s 12th man the score would have been 12-7 in favor of Rockdale.

40 YEARS AGO…

Julie Glaser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Glaser, was crowned Miss Rockdale Fair 1983 at the beauty pageant in the junior high commons. First runner-up was Tracy Reynolds, daughter of Pauline Reynolds of Rockdale and Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Reynolds of Katy. Second runner-up was Kathryne Parsley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Parsley. Nineteen contestants participated in the pageant which featured Dana Rogers, Miss Texas.

Hayrides, refreshments, chili and thrills were promised in a Halloween Spook House Friday after the Rockdale- Caldwell football game. Three area Baptist churches— First Baptist, Meadowbrook and Mount Zion— were sponsoring the event, according to Perry Eaton, First Baptist minister of music and youth.

20 YEARS AGO…

The day Rockdale Historical Society members had been dreaming about finally arrived. The century old International & Great Northern Railroad depot again had its cupola and tower. The “depot toppers” were built by Gary Jackson, Historical Society volunteer. The depot was being restored for use as a museum by the society.

10 YEARS AGO…

The 38th Rockdale Fair, reached heights never scaled by any of the previous 37. Area businesses and organizations, bidding in a pair of auctions to benefit area FFA and 4-H youth, dug deep and contributed $382,351, much of which would end up paying for college educations.
