The City Pantitorium, owned and operated by W.B. Talley, was gutted by fire, the blaze starting from an overheated stove in the drying room at the rear of the establishment. Due to the inflammable nature of the business the flames were beyond control before Mr. Talley could put his fire extinguisher into service. (Editor’s note: I didn’t know what a pantitorium was, so I looked it up. A business where you could get your pants pressed as well as regular clothes cleaning services. A precursor to dry cleaners.)
In commemoration of Armistice Day, Carlyle Post No. 358, American Legion would be holding suitable religious services at the Presbyterian church in Rockdale on Nov. 11. The sermon was to be delivered by the Post Chaplain, Rev. D.C. Wallace. A delightful party was at the home of Mr. I.P. Sessions, when she entertained the Sans Souci club. The home was beautifully decorated with sunburst roses. After many enjoyable table games of 42, a delicious two-course luncheon was served: Chicken and fruit salad, potato chips, pickles, sandwiches and coffee, fruit cream and cake. The favors were dainty powder puffs in little cases, the handiwork of the hostess.
At the last Chamber of Commerce meeting, the most discussed situation in Rockdale was that of the “town cow,” many loud complaints having been made lately regarding the devastation wrought by straying family cows, loose mules and other animals which had been trampling down and eating flower gardens and shrubbery in all parts of town. The motion was adopted with full endorsement of the Chamber of Commerce asking that council take immediate action to relieve the situation.
Flaming posters in all the colors of the rainbow throughout the town proclaimed the fact that Christy Brothers’ Four-Ring Wild Animal Shows were to be seen in Rockdale on Nov. 14.
