A splendid gathering of members of the Carlisle Post No. 358 of the American Legion was held at the Legion rooms on Dec. 14. A number of matters on the agenda were gone into and passed on, and the financial statement for the year 1923 was read and adopted. The election of officers for the year 1924 was taken up after a very fine spirited address by Post Commander Percy Diehl. Major Pat Cassidy was the unanimous selection for the position of Post Commander but was learned with regret that owing to business pressure and the fact that his movements were uncertain, he could not with justice to either the Legion or himself accept the position. As Major Pat explained, when requesting the withdrawal of his name, no one regretted this more than he did.
One of the most elaborate functions of the Christmas season was the dinner “42” when Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Green entertained Ye Merry Wives Club. The home was decorated with Christmas greens and radiated a warm welcome, and the season’s spirit of good cheer prevailed. A turkey dinner was served with all the usual accessories, after which the game was enjoyed by the club members and a few guests. At the conclusion Mrs. Bruce Gentry and Mr. E.B. Phillips were presented with the club prizes for high score, while Mrs. F.T. Coulter and Mr. J.E. Cooke proved to be the fortunate guests. Each table prize was a miniature Santa Claus.
Card of thanks: I want to thank the fire boys for their prompt and efficient work in saving my home. Had it not been for the fire department my home would have been destroyed, and I want the public to know I appreciate the unselfish work of these volunteer firemen. A. Longmire.

Twent y - f i v e members of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire department braved 23-degree temperatures and icy winds for five hours, fighting a blaze which destroyed a 2,700-squarefoot home completed just last August. The fire leveled the rambling, ranch-style rock and cedar home of Jay and Betty Brown which they had built on a picturesque, 22-acre wooded tract at the north end of Allday Street.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525 Ladies Auxiliary donated 115 Christmas packages to Rockdale’s two nursing homes this holiday season.

Temple of Praise’s “Jonah and the Whale” won the best overall prize in Rockdale’s Christmas Parade, which drew a large crowd downtown. The City of Thrall’s igloo, snowman and penguins perfectly captured the spirit of the day which saw near freezing temperatures and cold north winds of more than 20 miles per hour. Rockdale’s festivities had been postponed for a week due to even colder temperatures, and the fear of an ice storm on Dec. 7.
