Due to the activity of Mayor H.C. Meyer the members of the Rockdale Fire Department and their young lady sponsors were guests at a banquet given by the Rockdale businessmen on the night of Jan. 14. It was the custom of the fire boys to give an annual banquet in December or January with the city officials as guests. This year Mayor Meyer “beat them to it” and was arranging the details of the banquet, with the fire boys to be invited guests. Any businessman in the city could also become a guest by paying $1 for his plate. Quite a number of businessmen had signified their intention of attending on that basis. The Reporter always tended that the businessmen ought to banquet the fire boys instead of vise versa, and we were pleased that was to be done that way this time.

Preston Graves, a wellknown farmer of the Lilac community, accepted the appointment of deputy sheriff of Milam County, succeeding H.H. Hartsfield, who had moved to Buckholts. The new official lived in Milam County all his life and ranked among the leading citizens of the county. He was particularly well qualified for the position and Sheriff Drue Rogers was to be congratulated upon his splendid appointment. His many friends welcomed Mr. Graves to Cameron.

Mrs. W.C. Marrs was hostess to the Matinee Musical Club Dec. 18 in the form of a Christmas party. The house was beautifully decorated in holly and poinsettias. After the club program a game was played. Flora Sharp, holding high score, received the prize, a beautiful silver basket. The guests were invited into the sun parlor and beheld the Christmas tree, with gifts from the hostess and president for each member. After a great deal of merriment over the tree the ladies were then ushered into the dining room where a most elaborate luncheon was served. At a late hour guests departed proclaiming Mrs. Marrs a most charming hostess.

Rockdale’s first baby of 1984 was January Antoinette Walton, born less than two hours into the new year. Miss January arrived at 1:52 a.m. on Jan. 1 at St. Edward’s Hospital in Cameron, delivered by Dr. Dean Carrigan.

Accidental shooting was ruled in the Dec. 11 death of a 24-year-old Rockdale man. Justice of the Peace Leonard Allen said that the fatal shooting of Ronnie J. Brogger outside his apartment at 108 Pear St. was “probably accidental.”

Members of the Rockdale Communities in Concert Band and one member of the Rockdale High School Big Blue Band participated in the 30th annual “Tuba Christmas” program on the steps of the State Capitol in Austin on Dec. 22. The gathering features Christmas favorites with an all-tuba band.

The lights were on this holiday season at the newest Rockdale gateway sign, located on US 79 at the western city limits. This was the third gateway sign to go up. The signs were a project of the Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD). “We wanted to have it up for Christmas,” Gary Griesbach, MDD president, said. “Through the cooperation and hard work of a number of Rockdale businesses, we were able to do that.”
