The “cold snap” which brought to a close the first part of the week, also brought to this section of the state the coldest weather of the winter, so far. The thermometers in Rockdale registered as low as 22 degrees and the heaviest ice seen here in several winters formed. The fronts were unusually heavy, having at most the appearance of a blanket of snow. Accompanied by a bright sky and wonderful sunshine, the cold weather was not unwelcome after almost a full month of damp, rainy weather in December.

Wilden Caldwell, a member of the track team for two years, was unanimously chosen captain of the 1924 cinder artists. He, with several old men from the previous year, were working out daily getting into seasonal form. The track team had lost but one man from last year’s championship team and bid fair to win county team and district honors again this year.

At a budgeted expense of $14,485, the Milam County Commissioners Court would maintain the State Highways of the county for the first six months on 1924, having entered into a contract with the State Highway Department to this effect. In case of overflow or other unlooked for calamity, the state would stand the additional expense.

Examinations for teachers’ certificates for the year 1924 were to be held in Cameron on the following dates: Feb. 1 and 2; April 4 and 5; June 6 and 7; July 4 and 5; Aug. 15 and 16; Sept. 5 and 6; Dec. 5 and 6. The schedule of examinations were the same as in 1923, that is, each subject would be given at the same time as last year. The same fee, $4, would be charged each applicant.

After a storm of protest at a proposed pet registration fee of $5 per head, the city council gave first reading to a revised ordinance that exempts households with less than five pets. “We did away with the registration except for breeders and people with five or more pets,” Shelli Turner, city secretary, said. “That’s the part of the original proposal that had everyone irate.”

The local hero of the week was Pearlie Mack. Mrs. Mack worked tirelessly as a volunteer at the Eastside Tutoring Resource Program at New Hope Baptist Church. She had worked with that program since its beginning 18 years ago.
