100 YEARS AGO… The Reporter editor was impressed with the rush at the Rockdale post office during the holidays and, upon mentioning it to Postmaster E.I. Wade, we were invited “behind the scenes” one day and given a peep at the amount of mail matter handled, and the system used. After viewing at close range, the thousands of pieces of second, third and fourth-class mail piled up awaiting attention we retired more convinced than ever that the Rockdale post office force was hard-working and accommodating in the extreme, and the boys not to be censured if they occasionally throw a letter or paper in the wrong box. Speaking of the rush, Postmaster Wade informed us that the business of the Rockdale post office showed a steady gain throughout the year of 1923, and the increase over 1922 was approximately 18 per cent.
The Boy Scouts entertained the Camp Fire Girls with an opossum hunt and weenie roast. The crowd met at city hall, where cars took the noisy bunch south of town about three miles, where the hunt really began.
Carlyle Post Number 358 American Legion met in special session on Jan. 11 for the purpose of planning a program for 2024 and judging by the appearance of official personnel for the coming year, they were to have a very busy time for all “us hired hands.” A committee was appointed to meet with the city council for the purpose of obtaining permission to use a portion of Fair Park on which to erect a club house for Carlyle Post.
Mrs. Jule Coffield Jr. entertained the bridge club. The club high score prize, two exquisite bud vases, was won by Mrs. M.R. Summers. Guest prize was awarded to Mrs. R.L. Long of Navasota. An appetizing salad course was served at the close of the games to Mesdames Ben Lowenstein Jr., H.C. Vance, M.R. Summers, Kenton Hairston, H.Q. Quebe, Lon Hudson, Roy Long and Miss Eleanor Phillips.
40 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale native Liz Galloway was completing her first semester as assistant women’s basketball coach at Northwestern University in Chicago, a Big 10 women’s athletic power. Miss Galloway, daughter of Cornell and Edna Mitchell of Rockdale was a 1973 graduate of Rockdale High School and was a key member of the 19711972 Tigerette team which finished second in the state in Class 3A.
20 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale ISD gave the go ahead to two major projects, voting to solicit bids on the district’s first softball complex and an electrical upgrade of 50-year-old Rockdale High School.
A 14-year-old female juvenile was taken to the Rockdale Juvenile Justice Center after an incident involving a family vehicle which was wrecked near Manor Oaks Nursing Home on South FM 487.
10 YEARS AGO…
One of the major projects remaining in the restoration of Rockdale’s Kay Theatre was assured when the city council voted unanimously to award $12,000 for air conditioning and heating its auditorium.
