The Milam County School Depository last week, we are informed by County Superintendent Chadwick, received the sum of $31,252 from Austin to be credited to the available school funds of the common school districts of Milam County. This sum represents a $4 per capita payment, based upon an enrollment of 7,813 children in the common school districts in the county.

The Rockdale School Board, the Rockdale Parent- Teacher Association, the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and the Rockdale Merchants are joining hands to make the visitor to the County Meet enjoy their stay in Rockdale. Track-Field equipment has been amply provided for at Fair Park, where the athletic events will be held. This equipment includes first -class hurdles, costing $60,000, discus, shot, pole and standard pole vaulting, etc. The bet half-mile race track int he county has been put in splendid shape for the athletic runners. You will see some of the best races among the county athletes if you come to the County Meet. The other events will be held at Rockdale’s new High School building (editor’s note: my great-grandfather meant the “old junior high” building which has since been torn down). A complete program will be furnished to every visitor upon arrival the first day.

More rain has fallen this week, and another serious set-back to farming operations given. Old timers say this season is unparalleled in the history of the county. What little corn has been planted will undoubtedly rot in the ground. However, there is precious little seed this wasted. Much ground has never been touched by a plow. Ed Simms, manager of the big Simms plantation, state last Saturday that up to the day hi plantation force had been able to work but eleven days out of seventy- seven; and rain has prevailed since Saturday. Milam County’s acreage in corn will probably be the shortest ever know this year, which of course means more cotton.
