100 YEARS AGO…
Carlyle Post 358, American Legion, at a recent meeting determined upon staging a big Fourth of July celebration in Rockdale this year. By agreement with the Cameron Post the 4th of July was celebrated in Cameron last year and will be celebrated in Rockdale this year. An all-day picnic at Fair Park with both horse and automobile races and a good baseball game are planned, winding up with an exhibition of fireworks that night.
Pipeline runs of crude oil from the Rockdale-Minerva shallow field for the week ending April 18 were: Milam Petroleum Company shipped out 2,399 barrels, Owens Refining Company run to Minerva refinery 1,552 barrels; total for the week 2,591 barrels; daily average runs for the week 565 barrels; posted prices $2, $2.5, $2.25; gravity 36 to 39 degrees and above.
Sunday morning at 2 a.m. Sheriff D rue S . R ogers a nd Deputy N.O. Kennedy disturbed the quiet but nevertheless earnest proceedings of a poker game several miles from the city. Fourteen men were taken under arrest and will be charged with gaming or sweating the game.
The Tuesday Bridge Club had a delightful meeting last week with Mrs. H.O. Quebe. The refreshment trays, on which the hostess served a delicious salad course, were decorated in accordance with the Easter season and centered with dainty boxes containing hand-made handkerchiefs for the holders of high score at each table. The club prize was an exquisite pair of electric torches, won by Mrs. H.C. Vance. Mrs. James Coleman, guest for the afternoon, was awarded a box of correspondence cards. The Camp Fire Girls met at the home of Miss Irma Porter April 17. They are going to stencil domestic curtains and dresser scarves, and for the first step they hemmed their pieces with gaily-colored threads.
40 YEARS AGO…
The Rockdale City Council meeting Monday is a special session at City Hall, issued a call for bids to pave a Rockdale Street. Summit Drive, which serves St. John’s United Methodist Church and several residences is targeted for assessment paving, according to City Secretary Brenda Surovik.
20 YEARS AGO… After four years of beautiful weather, Rockdale’s fifth annual Dewberry Jam Fun Run/Walk was a wet, windy and chilly affair Saturday, starting and ending at Veterans Memorial Park Linwood Acres Garden Club’s annual Spring Happening netted approximately $1,000 toward the club scholarship last Wednesday. Dr. Lucile Estell, spokesperson, said tickets sold for the event netted between $650 and $700 with a silent auction bringing in $350.
10 YEARS AGO…
The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce’s Easter Egg Hunt at Rockdale Residence and Rehab Center, co-hosted by the Rockdale ISD iTigers program, drew a turnout estimated at over 300 on Friday. The event included balloon art, face painting, free food and, of course, Easter Egg hunts for several age divisions.
