100 YEARS AGO

The Rockdale Public School will close its present session tomorrow after a very successful year's work in all departments. The graduating class is the largest in the history of the school, consisting of twenty- four members, as follows: Misses Ruth Bowling, Ruth J. Bunting, Clara Bell Burney, Aline Catchings, Helen Coulter, Willie L. Day, Emmagene Ferguson, Charlsye Gregory, Lena Hendricks, Ina Mae Hillyer, Aileen Lamont James, Carmen Jaimes, Osie Lee Kilpatrick, Miriam W. Lowenstein, Ruby Lee Offield, Ruth E. Spiegel, Thelma Stephens and Robbie I Williams. Messrs. Wilden Caldwell, Don C. Cohn, Homer T. Dymke, Malcolm A. Green, Robert Lee Sikes and Ray Catchings. The Commencement Exercises will be held in the high school auditorium next Monday night, May 26. The class address will be delivered by Dr. Claud Howard of Southwestern University.

Miss Frances Murphree entertained with an informal porch dance last Friday night. Music was furnished by the Edison and the dancing was enjoyed very much on the large, cool porch. All retreated to the punch bowl between dances. Miss Mary Frances made an ideal hostess and those present only with that she would entertain more often.

The domestic science department of the Rockdale Colored School gave a splendid demonstration of the work carried on in this department last Friday afternoon. The class of about thirty-four girls marched in to music played by Gladys Shields, the music teacher. Each girl carried her appetizing dish and placed it on the table. Principal D.S. Shanks gave a talk explaining the work, and Mrs. Shanks on how it is carried on and the equipment used. The class is to be complimented on their work. It has only been established since March 17, two months, and the food was delicious.

40 YEARS AGO

Rockdale businessman Wayne Brinkley has donated an 80-by-100-foot lot, appraised at $10,000, to Rockdale Hospital Authority. It is the last remaining lot the hospital authority needed to secure the 10.6acre hospital tract. Hospital board president Emory Camp said, 'We are very grateful to Mr. Brinkley for this community- minded gift.

A preliminar y repor t on Milam County tax reappraisal indicates taxable values over the $1 billion mark, a 37-percent increase.

20 YEARS AGO

If newly-elected Mayor John Shoemake needs to call on past experience, he'll find plenty in former mayors Bill Avrett and Wallace Jones. They were among a crowd of well-wishers who gathered Friday afternoon at city hall for a reception honoring Jones who served six years as mayor and, before that, 17 years as a city councilman. He passed up the ballot this year. Avrett, who Jones succeeded in 1998 as mayor, served in the office 18 years.

10 YEARS AGO

A benefit for a “man with 1,000 kids” net ted over $18,000 and a ton of good wishes Saturday at The Ranch. Ofc. Tommy Shriver is a member of the Rockdale Police Department and, during the school year, is assigned fulltime to the Rockdale ISD as its school resource officer. Shriver has multiple myeloma, a bone marrow/blood cancer. The benefit raised $18,600 to help defray expenses for Shriver’s fight against cancer.
