Baccalaureate services held in honor of the graduating class of 1924, Rockdale High School, were largely attended Sunday night at First Baptist Church of Rockdale. Dr. J.L. Massey, pastor of First Methodist Church had charge of the ceremonies. The program opened with instrumental music, a march played by Mrs. C.M. Perry. To the inspiring strains of this beautiful music marched the graduation class, led by Wesley Blackburn in the capacity of usher, carrying the class colors, white and green. The class marched in twos, the young ladies beautifully gowned in white, carrying bouquets of sweet peas. The young men were dressed in darker colors, and being fewer in number were placed advantageously in the line of march contrasting nicely with their companions.
Commencement exercises of the 1924 graduating class of the Rockdale High School Monday evening closed a very successful year of work, with one of the largest classes in the history of the school. There were 23 members of the class who bade farewell to old Rockdale High, but in whose memories will linger the many happy hours of study and play spent in and around the old school, which has stood as a beacon light pointing the way to heights beyond, ever upward and onward in the educational world.
On May 15, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brockenbush tendered their father a surprise birthday dinner at his home in the Bushdale community, the occasion being in celebration of his 80th birthday. The beautifully laid table was lovely in its decorations of exquisite flowers and fruits, and all kinds of tempting eatables were brought by the children, that formed a feast that would do justice to the gods. This pioneer couple were the center of attraction, and many gifts and well wishes were bestowed on them for many more years as useful citizens. Mr. Brockenbush came to America 56 years ago, landing in Galveston, where he resided for three years. He then came to Milam County, and settled on the farm in the Bushdale community where he and his good wife resided for 53 continuous years.
