10-20-40-100 YEARS AGO 100 YEARS AGO…

A crowded house greeted the opening of Rockdale’s revival Sunday night at the First Baptist Church. In the absence of the of the Evangelist, Pastor Garrett preached the opening sermon, and also conducted the service Monday night. At the conclusion of the service Sunday night, two candidates presented themselves for consideration, one asking for admission to the Baptist Church, and the other professing Christ and testifying to his conversion. Dr. W.Y. Pond of Waco arrived in the city Tuesday night and took charge of the meeting. He devoted some time to make himself acquainted with the congregation and in laying out plans with directions for bringing about a spiritual revival.

Dr. and Mrs. T.S. Barkley entertained the “Ye Merrie Wives Club” and guests with a delightful Japanese lawn party. Brilliant lights amidst festoons of Japanese lanterns and a profusion of beautiful roses transformed the lawn into a veritable Japanese garden. Game tables featured the Japanese idea in pretty, orange-colored covers, table markers and score cards. Delicious fruit punch was served throughout the games. In conclusion a refreshing ice cream course of Neapolitan brick cream and angel food was served.

Friends of Mr. J. F. Coffi eld Sr. were pleased to learn that he was recuperating nicely at his home following a rest cure prescribed by his physician. Mr. Coffield, while not confined to his bed, was following physician orders as to absolute quiet and rest from business cares and worries. He was reported as improving fast and his friends hope to see him again soon at his usual place of business.

Pink Horton opened a new barber shop in the location adjoining Hill’s Book Store. Mr. Horton’ associate in the new business, was T.H. Godfrey. Horton being named Pink and Godfrey being red-headed appropriately named the place “Pink & Red.”

40 YEARS AGO…

The mercury peaked at 104 degrees Sunday, the hottest temperature of the summer, according to Rockdale’s official weather observers, Mr. and Mrs. George Swearingen. Readings of 100-degrees-plus were also recorded Sunday and Monday, making a total of six 100-degree days in August.

20 YEARS AGO…

First day RISD enrollment was listed at 503 at the high school, 436 in junior high, 879 at elementary and 33 at the Rockdale Regional Juvenile Justice Center, a total of 1,851.

10 YEARS AGO…

It’s had more lives than Super Mario but the Cameo Building in downtown Rockdale is being demolished this week. The landmark pink facade was to come down at mid-week. The often-condemned building was being demolished by owner Gloria Thrasher. It was damaged when a firewall fell Aug. 29-30, 2012. The city council had threatened to take the matter to court.
