Quick action by the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department saved one of Rockdale’s most historic homes in a Monday evening fire. Fire Chief Ward Roddam said volunteers were called to the former Herbert Fiesler house, Murray at Bowser, at 7:20 p.m. to find light smoke coming from the attic. Roddam said volunteers entered the unoccupied house, found a small fire, extinguished it and then went into “minimize damage” mode. Roddam credited neighbors with detecting the smoke and alerting the RVFD. He termed the blaze “electrical.” The house, most recently occupied by the Charles and Neva Caffey family, once denoted the western edge of town. It was featured two years ago in a photo book of Texas’ structures build of petrifi ed stone.
