100 YEARS AGO....

The Reporter didn’t think much of the Gentry Bros. Circus visit to Rockdale: “Its equipment is rundown at the heel. Is animals are a joke...(it is) dirty and grimy and the people with it are of a like nature..a bunch of bums, dirty and impudent and ready to insult if you refuse to be overcharged. The street parade is a joke, the performance a hoax and the concert is a holdup. (At least it) got out of town quickly, taking with it all its hangers-on, gamblers and bums.”

Front-page coverage of President Woodrow Wilson’s stroke. The president would be partially paralyzed through the remainder of his term.

Lt. Ray Robinson was home from Germany where he warned “Germany was not whipped: and warned unless the League of Nations idea caught on, American troops would be back in Europe in 10 years.

Forest Grove farmers reported severe damage to their corn crop from standing water with additional damage to those ears not covered by water.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Rockdale business men were working on the new “gasohol” technology hoping to retrofit a downtown warehouse to produce 190-proof alcohol.

The Rockdale Independent School District announced it would no longer transport students who were ineligible to ride certain bus routes, according to Business Manager Gilbert Bernstein.

County Agent Bill McCutchen said the 1979 county pecan crop was so heavy that limbs were breaking off many trees due to the weight.

Giddings running back-place kicker Thomas “Tank” Sanders scored all 14 points and the Buffaloes defeated the Rockdale Tigers 14-6.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Even with the most thorough street paving project in decades, Rockdale’s city tax rate was set to drop 7.76 cents.

The Texas Department of Transportation altered its “preferred” US 79 loop route north of Rockdale to miss several more residences. The project had still not received funding approval.

Texas Dept. of Transportation (TxDOT) crews began laying the first of two hot mix applications on US 79 through downtown Rock-dale as a long-awaited highway project got underway.

Rockdale had 21 snaps inside the Burnet 20, 12 of them inside the 10 but 2o of their 22 passes were incomplete or interceptions and the Bulldogs prevailed 24-14.

TEN YEARS AGO....

DNA obtained from drops of sweat was the key evidence as the Milam County Sheriff’s Department built a case against members of what they termed a theft ring operating in Milam and Burleson Counties.

Rockdale police were awaiting the results of an autopsy after the body a missing 26-year-old Rockdale man was discovered in the 600 block of Mill Street.

One hundred thirty nine participants competed in the annual Run for the Kay to benefit restoration of Rock-dale’s Kay Theatre. The event raised $8,000 toward the effort.

It was back to the basics as a physical Rockdale Tiger manhandled Cameron 41-21 for Big Blue’s fifth win in five tries for the 2009 football season.
