100 YEARS AGO....

Tragedy in the Coffield Farms area near Rockdale as a child died when it became en tangled in its crib, tried to kick free and sustained a broken neck.

Dr. M. M Gough of Milano made three house calls to separate locations at which the patients were three separate men named John Williams.

Classes began at the Sharp School with very few students attending, due to a late cotton-picking season. Recent rains had delayed the cotton harvest.

Rockdale’s newest business was the Rockdale Corn Company, located near the SA&AP Railroad Depot in the former Smith Grocery building. The company was established to handle what was termed an “unusually large” corn crop.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

A group of Ham Branch area residents appeared before the Rockdale City Council seeking relief for their often flooded section of Central Rockdale.

Milam County commissioners were studying seven redistricting plan options as they prepared to host a series of meetings before adopting a proposal.

It was a sign of the times. Rockdale ISD students were about to get their first computer-generated report cards, according to Assist Supt. JoAnn Conoley.

It must have been a “Two-Minute Drill” game plan. Rockdale scored 4 of its 5 TDs with less than two minutes remaining in the first half and in the fourth quarter en route to a 34-13 thumping of Pflugerville.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

A 16-year-old Bremond football player collapsed and died in Milano during a game with the Eagles. Remainder of the contest was canceled. An autopsy revealed the teen had “an enlarged, diseased heart.”

A 37-year-old Rockdale man was in serious condition in a Temple hospital after being stabbed in a Rockdale bar. The victim drove himself home and called for medical aid.

Traffic jams on downtown US 79 through Rockdale were the norm and Texas Dept. of Transportation contractors poured asphalt on a highway widening project.

Rockdale sent a message to District 19AAA football teams. Casey Creghan’s Tigers, 2-3 in pre-district, shut out previously unbeaten Smithville 9-0.

TEN YEARS AGO....

Milam County’s newest town—Downtown Texas (Apache Pass)—was established with a formal dedication ceremony.

Six months of legal zoning wrangling was over and an antique shop was set to open on North Ackerman. The Rockdale City Council approved a zoning change to allow the new business, going against a Planning & Zoning Board decision not to allow the zoning change.

With Luminant now the Rockdale area’s largest employer, after the closure of Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations, company records showed 36 percent of their employees resided in Rock-dale’s 76567 zip code.

Four Tigers tackled a Mustang running back in the end zone to provide the winning margin in a 9-7 Rockdale road victory.
