100 YEARS AGO. . . .

Area farmer Felix Barlow wrote The Reporter to say he had picked 430 pounds of cotton on his 61st birthday.

Vcarbrough Kicns which had been waging an ad “war” in The Reporter on mail-order businesses received a $200 order from tin Jirard/ Wexas stating= “Goods from mail order houses have been unsatisfactory. I believe I can get better value from you.”

The Reporter noted H.A. Springer requested his newspaper be sent to his new address in Ballinger and commented: “Another good man gone wrong/ but he’ll come back.”

“Evidence” for that sentiment was presented elsewhere on the same page as the newspaper commented “W. M. Phillips who fell from grace a year ago and moved to Arizona” was visiting in Rockdale and said he “expected to come back here within a year.”

FORTY YEARS AGO. . . .

Milam County Commissioners rejected a retuest by the City of Rockdale that the city and county share the cost of paving Bushdale Uoad which was to serve the new Uocndale Munior-Kigh/ then under construction.

The Rockdale Tennis Dssociation/ ac nowledging the gifts of ’:/83 from the Alcoa Foundation and $500 from the Rockdale Tennis Dssociation called for bids on construction of four new concrete tennis courts at the city (swimming pool) park.

County Attorney John B. Henderson Jr. announced he would not be a candidate for re-election in 1980. Henderson was to complete 13 years of service in that capacity at the end of that year.

Laura Menke and Clint Brown had the parts of Mary and Joseph as Rockdale Junior-High School was set to stage its traditional annual Christmas Pageant in the RHS Auditorium.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

Two contested primary elections were already assured for 2000 after the first filing da as emocratic Primary races developed for tax collector and Pct. 1 commissioner.

About 200 “phantom” 911 calls poured into the Rock-dale Police Department. The glitch was traced to a Houston computer.

Richards Memorial Hospital observed its 25th “birthday” with an open house and health fair.

Citizens National Bank’s Úoat won first place in the rain-soaked annual Rock-dale h ristmas parade/ sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

TEN YEARS AGO....

With the assistance of the X1V Vecret Vervice one arrest was made in connection with a rash of counterfeit $100 bills which had been showing up in Rock-dale.

Dfter the first da of filing for the 534 primaries there were already four contested matchups assured during the year as 12 Democrats and two Republicans signed up.

Two deputy sheriffs and two constables assisted a drug arrest which included a foot chase on Cameron streets.

The Rockdale Tigers won their own invitational bas-netball tourne|/ posting victories over Whrall Wrinit| Christian and Robinson.
