100 YEARS AGO....
Speaker at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce reorganization meeting was S. E. Eberhard of the Bryan Chamber. The Reporter: “Mr. Eberhard spoke at some length. (He) could have condensed his remarks considerably if he had committee boosting his home town.”
Rockdale’s girls basketball team made a road trip, to Thorndale, losing 11-8. RHS team members were Ella Randle, Lena Hendrix, Annie Mae Prewitt, Aline James, Virginia Sanford, Ina May Hillyer and Clara Cooke.
With warmer weather, Gus Vogel’s ice wagon was again on the streets delivering to customers.
An ad for 17 Rockdale businesses included an 8-line poem for each. One closed this way: “Whether you order ham and eggs; A chili, soup or stew; A steak or chops or a stack or cakes; You get what’s coming to you.—At the Olympia Cafe.
FORTY YEARS AGO....
Rockdale ISD trustees were mulling a request by Rockdale Emergency Medical Services personnel to purchase property owned by the school at the corner of Wilcox and Davilla for use as an ambulance station.
Cajun humorist Justin Wilson had 575 persons rolling in the aisles at the annual Cameron Chamber of Commerce banquet.
The RHS Big Blue Band, seeking to raise $36,000 to finance a trip to Mexico City closed the books on a successful effort with over $40,000 banked.
Lew Simmonds’ Tiger tracksters won 10 of the 15 events, rolled up 244 points and easily won the 24th Rockdale Relays.
TWENTY YEARS AGO....
John Robertson was named Outstanding Citizen and Cub Scout Pack 789 Organization of the Year at the annual Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Banquet. No Citizen of the Year award was bestowed.
Filing for May city and school elections was complete and there was a four-person race for Place 1 on the Rockdale ISD School Board where incumbent Kerry Starnes was challenged by Jerry Caywood, Louis Gifford and Herbie Vaughan.
Tommy Hancock of Westbrook was named the new superintendent in the Milano ISD. Hancock replaced interim Supt. George Jett who replaced Don Hafley, who had retired.
Hot-hitting Tiger shortstop Chris Young hammered two home runs but Elgin held on for an exciting 9-7 baseball win in the 19AAA district opener.
TEN YEARS AGO....
Rockdale ISD trustees and administrators found a way around state curriculum guidelines and were keeping physical education and health classes in the district.
Many Rockdale residents made the short trip to Taylor to view “The Wall that Heals,” a traveling scale model of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C.
Cody Caldwell was named citizen of the year, Joan Ratliff outstanding citizen and VFW Post 6525 organization of the year at the annual Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
The annual Milam County Junior Livestock Show auction raised $163,442 for Milam 4-H and FFA youth.
