100 YEARS AGO...

Commencement week opened on the high school campus with a carnival and pageant, featuring the crowning of the Queen of May. Due to showers the opening of the carnival was delayed, until the Rockdale Band, composed mostly of school boys, sounded the opening notes of the grand march and the characters formed in groups preparatory to the entrance of the queen and her court.

The regular meeting of Rockdale Lodge No. 414 AF&AM was held May 27. This was for the annual election of officers.

The list of gifts for distribution June 13, Second Monday Trade Day, the pearl necklace was credited to Perry & Quebe alone. It should have been credited to the drug firm and the Douthit Jewelry Co., the two firms giving the necklace together.

Investors from Dallas who had stayed in Rockdale on the hunt for three or four weeks, were understood to have closed the drilling contracts for 2,000 to 3,000 acres five miles south of town, but the details were unavailable.

FORTY YEARS AGO...

Overcrowding of the elementary school and how to ease it was the dominant theme in three Citizens Advisory Committee reports to the Rockdale school board.

A monument bearing the names of some 215 Milam County military personnel killed in World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam was set to be dedicated at the courthouse in Cameron.

Hundreds of fun-seekers attended the Rockdale Knights of Columbus council’s annual picnic at the KC Hall and grounds just east of Rockdale on US 79.

The annual three-night Jubilee Days Rodeo, sponsored by the Rockdale Roping & Cutting Club, was set to be held June 11-13 at the club’s Fair Park arena.

TWENTY YEARS AGO...

One year and one month after major financial problems stalled the expansion of Rockdale’s city library into the adjacent Vogel building, the library’s advisory board was seeking ideas, wondering where to go from there.

Alcoa was to file a pollution control permit application for Sandow Power Plant Units 1, 2 and 3 by Sept. 1, years ahead of requirements spelled out in a bill on Gov. Rick Perry’s desk.

From Columbus to Bill Gates, Rockdale Elementary School fifth graders presented a walk through history in a midweek outdoor pageant.

Senior pitcher April Frei, junior first baseman Kelsey Morgan and freshman third baseman Meagan McQuary were first team Rockdale High School selections on the District 18-AAA softball squad selected by loop coaches.

TEN YEARS AGO...

A very familiar face was back in Milam County law enforcement. County commissioners on Monday unanimously appointed former Sheriff Charlie West to the Precinct 2 Constable vacancy created by the resignation of Heith Kemper.

Clayton Merka was the valedictorian and Kelsey Galbreath the salutatorian of the 134-candidate Rockdale High School graduating class of 2011. Both would be delivering speeches during commencement exercises set for June 3 at Tiger Field.

For the second time in two months, Rockdale firefighters responded to a blaze at the Westgate Apartments, 1819 West Cameron (US 79). Volunteers responded to find smoke pouring from the kitchen of Unit No. 3. That was downstairs from the apartment which was the source of a March 13 blaze that displaced several families.

Milam County commissioners on Monday approved the annual agreement with the Greater Rockdale E-Access Team (GREAT). GREAT was providing free computer and internet access at various locations around Rockdale. Milam County’s annual payment was $3,000.
