100 YEARS AGO....

The new Rockdale Chamber of Commerce had 85 members “from every branch of life in the city.” The Reporter said: “Old factions and political line were swept away by the spirit of fellowship which prevailed.”

Rockdale City Patrolman Tom Robertson corralled a horse on the streets of the city, said he had the animal in the city pound and planned to sell him at public auction.

Thorndale area resident Owen Towery said one of his cows gave birth to a two-headed calf which “could take nourishment out of either mouth.”

The influenza epidemic claimed more Americans in three months, and in statistics covering 46 cities, than did all of World War I. Statistics showed 125,512 deaths from the flu. As for the war, the official 116,708 deaths also included a number of Americans who died from the flu, not from military activities.

FORTY YEARS AGO....

Thirty-three sealed indictments kicked off a countywide drug bust by a combined force of law enforcement officers. Sheriff Leroy Broadus said the drug sweep was “only the first.”

Two train derailments, occurring within a few hundred yards, involved 20 railroad cars and sent one engineer and one brakeman to Richards Memorial Hospital.

Directors of the new Community Bank & Trust met and okayed a construction contract for the new bank to be built at the corner of Cameron and Wilcox (US 79 and FM 487).

Georgetown, Madisonville and the host Tiger tracksters were expected to battle it out for the team title at the 23rd annual Rockdale Relays.

TWENTY YEARS AGO....

A plaza in front of the Milam County Museum in Cameron was dedicated in honor of the county’s law enforcement officers.

Winners from the annual Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Banquet: Joan Ratliff, Citizen of the Year; Helen Perry, Outstanding Citizen; VFW Post 6525, Organization of the Year.

A body found in Williamson County was believed to be that of a missing 15-year-old Rockdale girl, listed as a missing person several weeks earlier.

Something finally stopped Terry Pope’s Tiger track team. Cold and rain ended the Caldwell Relays after only one running event and all the field events were called off.

TEN YEARS AGO....

The third annual Tejas Art & Book Festival included authors, speeches, a car show and a celebrity lookalike contest.

A miscommunication in operations resulted in the city’s Mill Street water tank being temporarily emptied, triggering a boil water alert.

Jeff Lieberman, who took the Thorndale Bulldogs to three straight final four basketball tourneys, and two consecutive state titles, announced his retirement after 36-year career, half of it at Thorndale.

It was almost a sweep for Giddings track teams at the Rockdale Relays. The Lady Buffaloes won the girls bracket, but Taylor edged the boys squad to win.
