100 YEARS AGO…
Mr. O.G. Moore, construction foreman of the new Rockdale High School building, arrived from Bryan Wednesday and informed The Reporter that work is scheduled to start on the new building immediately, some materials already being on the road.
Miss Mignon Graves invited a number of friends to a masquerade party at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Graves, to help celebrate her 10th birthday anniversary. The home was charming and bright in Christmas colors.
One of the prettiest and home-like places in Rockdale now is the old T.B. Kemp homestead which Mr. E.T. Kemp has had remodeled according to the extreme good taste of Mrs. Kemp. The entire front of the home has been changed, with a large, deep veranda and wide triple windows, The place is further beautified by concrete walks, brick colonnades and new fencing, fresh white paint completing the whole. Contractor Tom Marrs superintended the job.
The Jones Surprise Store, which has been closed for invoicing the past two days, will open Friday morning at 8 a.m. under new management, and will hereafter be known as Stricker’s Variety Store.
40 YEARS AGO…
Rockdale State Bank was the 118th state bank chartered in Texas, and it’s one of only 20 of those 118 still in business. They celebrated their 75th birthday in 1982.
Slowed market conditions for aluminum hit close to home here with the announcement that Alcoa will cut production temporarily at its Rockdale Works smelter. Approximately 100 employees were laid off.
More than 4,000 pounds of government surplus cheese was to be distributed here to eligible South Milam County residents. Distribution point was St. John’s United Methodist Church according to Rev. Donald Box, pastor, who said that the local distribution was arranged through the office of State Rep. Dan Kubiak.
20 YEARS AGO…
Three environmental groups filed suit in an Austin federal court alleging that Alcoa’s Rockdale Operations had “illegally dumped more than a million tons of health damaging pollutants” into the air near Rockdale. “We believe the suit is without merit. Alcoa will defend its record and we believe the courts will agree,” said Jim Hodson, Alcoa spokesman.
Construction in the city limits of Rockdale in 2001 kept pace with the previous year totaling $1,617,534 just below 2000’s total of $1,695,295.
10 YEARS AGO…
In a surprise move Friday, two days before a new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule targeting burning of lignite coal was to go into effect, a three-judge federal panel issued a “stay,” and will decide on the rule’s legality later this year.
The new year started with a bang, literally, in Rockdale as a three-foot section of a major water distribution line blew out Saturday afternoon, leaving much of the city without water service for several hours.
Milam County ought to be a busier, and safer, place in 2012 as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced about $4.9 million in road projects during 2012.
Rockdale High School’s iTigers program was sponsoring an after school soccer program for high school aged students, grades 9-12, coordinator Denice Doss has announced.
